Position Details

General Statement Montana State University seeks a dynamic Competitive Sports Coordinator. This position reports within Recreational Sports and Fitness, which aligns with the Student Wellness area, within the Division of Student Success. This position will be a crucial part of managing the programs, processes and infrastructure within the new Student Wellness Center, 185,000 square foot facility that will be home to Recreational Sports & Fitness, Student Health Services, Health Advancement and Counseling & Psychological Services. The Competitive Sports Coordinator will report to the Associate Director Recreational Sports & Fitness.
The Competitive Sports Coordinator assists with the supervises all aspects of the Intramural Sports and Club Sports programs within the department of Recreational Sports & Fitness. Under the guidance of the Associate Director, this position will be responsible for cultivating a successful competitive sports program by engaging in collaboration and teamwork, intentional communication strategies, critical thinking, evaluation & assessment, budget management and student development practices.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Day-to-day oversight of a diverse and comprehensive Intramural Sports program. Includes scheduling, training student supervisors and officials, program planning and budgeting. Help evaluate and implement pay to play fee schedule
  • Day-to-day oversight of a Club Sports program of approximately 30 +/- teams. Teach and mentor Club Sport groups, coaches, and advisors to help the clubs be successful and sustainable. Monitor club rosters and participant eligibility. Help manage club sports budget, assist with team budget practices
  • Assist with oversight of Lambert Turf Field Complex includes event scheduling, field house custodial, maintenance, snow removal, and management of student support staff
  • Provide event management for home athletic competitions
  • Assist with all policy development and implementation, risk management, budget management, travel arrangements, and program related equipment purchasing and inventory
  • Intentional evaluation and assessment of programs to make informed decisions and demonstrate programmatic outcomes i.e. student retention rates, learning outcomes, population specific participation, customer service
  • Intentional collaboration with colleagues within RSF, Associated Students of Montana State University (ASMSU) and various campus NS community partners
  • Manage and mentor Competitive Sports student staff and Graduate Assistants
  • Maintain knowledge of and implement current industry best practices
  • Maintain collegial, harmonious working relationships with others
  • Maintain a presence within the department and the Competitive Sports Program by attending program events and competitions in the evenings and weekends when necessary
  • Contribute to department wide strategic planning, student development, outreach and recruitment efforts

Required Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Business, Sport Science or an equivalent combination of relevant work experience and education
  • Experience working with/in recreation in a higher education setting
  • Preferred Qualifications – Experience, Education, Knowledge & Skills
  • Master’s degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management, Business, or Sport Science
  • Successful management experience in planning, budgeting, hiring staff training, scheduling, and ordering equipment
  • Significant experience working and collaborating with University/Municipal/Private recreation organizations
  • Experience advising Club Sports
  • Experience officiating several sports at various levels
  • Current certification in CPR/AED or the ability to obtain the certifications within three months of hire (in-house training is available)
