Communications & Media Relations Coordinator

The USC Thornton School of Music seeks a Communications & Media Relations Coordinator to join its high-performing Communications Team.

The Communication & Media Relations Coordinator duties include coordination of the school’s communications campaigns and event promotion; management of USC Thornton social media platforms; coordination of many of the school’s internal and external initiatives including a news feed, e-newsletter, event calendar, and concert programs; and other communications projects as assigned. The ideal candidate has a diverse skillset encompassing marketing, communications, media relations, and project management. 

The Thornton School is home to more than 185 faculty and 1,000 music majors divided into three divisions: Research and Scholarly Studies, Classical Performance and Composition, and Contemporary Music. Responsibilities Include:

Marketing & Communications (65%)

  • Manage communications initiatives including media relations and social media

  • Maintain and enhance the design and content of the school’s website, assisting in the evaluation and implementation of new and emerging web technologies

  • Manage marketing copy including news posts, press releases, event programs, and more

  • Coordinate production of e-newsletter and event promotion emails

  • Create and manage production calendars for news feed, event promotion, concert programs, social media, and more

  • Manage development of marketing collateral as assigned

  • Respond to internal inquiries and website updates from USC Thornton faculty & staff

  • Serve as primary moderator of departmental and music ensemble social media channels as well as pages created for the USC Thornton website

  • Track analytics data for website and social media accounts, ensuring accessibility compliance and high SEO performance

  • Oversight of student workers as assigned

Events & Promotion (35%)

  • Coordinate the development and production of the school’s online and print event calendars

  • Oversee event promotion campaigns for both internal and external audiences

  • Oversee production of school’s concert programs

  • Provide production support and coordination for vendors producing virtual events and digital media content of USC Thornton performances

Preferred Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years experience in marketing and communications, copy writing, social media, graphic design, and/or website management. An understanding of the Adobe Creative Suite is appreciated as well as online applications like WordPress, Mailchimp, Asana, and Hootsuite. Ideal candidates also have experience coordinating social media campaigns across a variety of platforms. A background in music is appreciated but not required.

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum Education: Bachelors Degree

  • Minimum Experience: 2 years

  • Minimum Field of Expertise: Marketing, publications, public relations, business administration, communication, advertising or related field experience. Knowledge of the principles and practices of marketing. Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
