Communications & Marketing Manager

Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech’s Department of Computer Science (CS) seeks outstanding candidates for the position of Communications & Marketing Manager. The Communications & Marketing Manager promotes the activities of CS faculty, staff, and students to internal and external constituencies across a variety of media platforms.

Reporting to the CS Director of Administrative Operations and the Director of Communications and Marketing for the College of Engineering (COE), the CS Communications & Marketing Manager develops, maintains, and organizes a unified media plan and marketing materials that strategically align the advancement and recruitment goals of the department, the COE, and the University with the ongoing promotion of people, research, and activities within the department. This position develops an annual work plan in consultation with CS and the COE and is evaluated using the success metrics within that plan.

The CS Communications & Marketing Manager identifies newsworthy subjects across the department and generates original articles, featurettes/spotlights, social media posts, website updates, print media, newsletters, and other informational materials designed to highlight productivity, innovation, and impact. In order to ensure appropriate translational treatments of departmental activity to a variety of audiences, the ideal candidate is skilled in the processes of inquiry, research, and interviewing. Through these processes, the CS Communications & Marketing Manager becomes conversant in departmental activities and research and is able to effectively promote the department’s significant socio-technical contributions and highlight its real and potential impacts on communities and society.

In addition to generating original content, the CS Communications & Marketing Manager will design and maintain a publication schedule and review and edit outward-facing content provided by department administrative leadership and other members of the department’s engagement team–the CS Alumni Relations Manager, the CS Event Specialist, the Strategic Partnership Coordinator, and the External Engagement Project Manager–to ensure adherence to brand guidelines, university policies and procedures, and accessibility standards.
