Position Summary

Partnering closely with the chair, department staff, and academic program directors, this position will be responsible for the following:

  • Develop communications for a wide variety of audiences (both internal and external), using appropriate methods and modes of communication to help engage and connect. (website, social media, newsletters, articles, etc.)
  • Develop and execute a strategic communications and marketing plan, complete with specific initiatives, objectives, and timelines for both internal and external audiences.
  • Oversee the planning and execution of various events, including alumni events, mentoring programs and workshops, student defenses, academic retreats, and faculty research discussions. Recruit speakers/presenters, develop and coordinate the distribution of advertisements for such events and materials as necessary.
  • Expand the department’s audience through development of databases, as well as identifying a process for collecting contact information from a variety of stakeholder groups and periodic review for quality and accuracy.
  • Identify opportunities for outreach to alumni, with an emphasis on connecting students to alumni.
  • Enhance our recruiting of students from diverse groups; identify contacts at minority-serving colleges and universities, regularly share programming information, and facilitate opportunities for education and collaborations.
  • Act as the liaison between the department and the Biomolecular Sciences Gateway during interviews and recruiting events.
  • Coordinate fundraising as needed.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; or radio production; or computer programming/technology; experience managing content for social media channels; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Ability to successfully connect and engage audiences using a wide variety of modes and methods; proven success in developing communications plans to drive strategy; experience using tools and resources utilized to collect and manage contact information; attention to detail; demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills, and ability to work in a diverse environment; publication production, marking/advertising services, web design, experience with social media channels, such as Facebook and Twitter.
