This position is part of an integrated Marketing & Communications team and reports directly to the Director of Communications. The Communications Manager is responsible for creating and maintaining editorial content across media channels including, but not limited to web, social media, and print publications. The Communications Manager may manage a group of freelance resources and/or student assistants and content producers. The ideal candidate should be an effective project manager with strong writing and editing skills.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Produce a high volume of accessible, engaging content and correspondence focused on the Goizueta’s brand and mission on a daily basis.
- Work with internal stakeholders to conceptualize, write, edit and oversee content production for the business school’s publications (Emory Business Magazine, emorybusiness.com news website, Alumni e-newsletter), and other collateral/publications as assigned.
- Build relationships with internal stakeholders and lead on editorial needs in support of consistent coverage of strategic priorities, programs, research, and alumni at the business school.
- Manage and update an editorial calendar.
- Create and assign stories to internal and freelance writers and manage project flow to ensure accurate and timely delivery of content.
- Proactively seek and suggest story ideas.
- Research, write (as needed), and copyedit editorial content.
- Work with Communications team members to conceptualize graphics and other audio/visual content to augment stories and add new dimensions to published stories.
- Book photographers and provide shot lists for photo shoots related to editorial content (and in support of other Marketing and Communications efforts).
- Work with Communications team members to ensure that “all the dots are connected” in messaging about Goizueta’s priorities utilizing the right resources and gathering information to shape messages.
- Consistently generate and shape content to be clear, friendly, concise, accurate, and true to Goizueta’s voice.
- Understand and support Goizueta’s content model, content types, and brand voice.
- Performs related responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A bachelor’s degree in journalism or a related field and five years of publishing, on-line marketing/communications or related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
- Excellent writing, editing, and verbal communication skills essential.
- Experience with new media (blogs, podcast, etc.), web/graphic design experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office software desired.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years of journalistic writing and editing experience required.
- Excellent project management skills, including proactive and independent development of work plans, timelines, and budgets.
- Strong copy editing and proofreading abilities with fastidious attention to detail and impeccable grammar, punctuation and spelling skills.
- Excellent writing ability demonstrated through relevant, progressively responsible writing and strategic messaging experience.
- Strong experience in multiple communications channels including, but not limited to, print, web, and social media platforms.
- Detail oriented, organized, and able to work with cross functional teams.
- Strong collaborator who is willing to fight for good ideas, but always a team player.
- Strong analytical skills and well-developed business acumen.
- Excellent research and news judgment.
- Ability to initiate and manage relationships with internal and external partners at all levels.
- A thorough working knowledge of print production.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of AP, Chicago, and/or additional writing styles.
- Understanding of WordPress or other blogging platforms and Trello preferred.
- Experience working in higher education preferred.
- Business writing experience preferred
NOTE: This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. Schedule is based on agreed upon guidelines of department of work. Emory reserves the right to change remote work status with notice to employee.
