Hiring Unit:

The Career Planning Service (CaPS) supports McGill students and recent alumni in the exploration of their career options. This includes not only internships but also permanent, part-time, and summer job searches. CaPS also help students develop lifelong career management skills by providing workshops, individual advising, a comprehensive job posting service, and an extensive Career Resource Centre.

Career Planning Service (CaPS) is a member of Student Services and as McGill’s central career service, we assist students from all faculties, schools and departments at all levels from undergraduates to postdocs. Recent alumni are also eligible to opt in to our services. CaPS is distinctive among McGill services in that we support student success both throughout their time at McGill and during the critical graduation transition to work/further education.

We collaborate with faculty, staff & units across campus, and have ongoing partnerships with employers and community organizations. Our highly trained and experienced staff are actively involved in a wide variety of provincial, national and international professional associations, regularly presenting at conferences and events.

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Leadership Skills Advisor, the Emerging Leaders Team Assistants assist in the organization and scheduling of the Emerging Leaders Team activities aimed at promoting leadership and engagement on campus. Emerging Leaders Team activities include facilitating peer-to-peer workshops, promoting leadership and student engagement through tabling and classroom announcements, Peer Coaching and Activities Night. This position involves building a learning environment around the themes of leadership and student involvement; using social media tools to facilitate communication between members of the Emerging Leaders Team; setting up and maintaining several informal meetings to socialize and share information; distributing feedback; and developing team dynamics. Furthermore, the Emerging Leaders Team Assistants will need to have a good awareness of the engagement opportunities around campus in order to inform and update the Emerging Leaders Team. This position supports in the coordination and development of other duties, as required.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assisting with organization and communication of Emerging Leaders Team recruitment and training.
  • Developing resources and promotional material to encourage leadership and student engagement on campus.
  • Updating the Leadership Skills Advisor on activity development and delivery, social media marketing research efforts and results, and addressing any concerns or issues on a regular basis.
  • Keeping a record and preparing report of Emerging Leaders Team activities, social media tools, strategy, new trends
    and sustainability of program

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:

  • Group facilitation experience
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and time management skills
  • Demonstrated initiative and is a self-starter
  • Ability to be focused, flexible, and work in a busy environment
  • Good knowledge of campus services and resources
  • Punctual, organized and professional
  • Autonomous, disciplined, motivated, reliable
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Knowledge of Social Media Networking applications such as Facebook

Education and Experience:

  • Currently registered as a full-time student in any degree program at McGill University
  • Will be a returning full-time student
  • Must be Work Study qualified
  • Graduate student, an asset
  • Spoken French, an asset

Supervision Received:

Candidate receives regular review of work.  Employee works within the framework of established procedures and receives direction as to objectives and policies.  Work supervised may be of a routine or variable nature.
