Job Summary Auburn University Campus Safety and Security is searching for a highly motivated, enthusiastic, strong communicator for a Communications & Marketing Specialist position. 

The Department of Campus Safety and Security provides programs and services to ensure a safe and secure campus, in support of Auburn University’s teaching, research, outreach and student services. A successful candidate will be self-driven and passionate about communicating to a wide and diverse audience about personal safety, crime prevention, and campus safety initiatives. Our team of dedicated, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic safety professionals will work collaboratively with the Communications Specialist to identify communications needs and assist with content development.

Position Summary:
The Communications Specialist will actively advance the safety of the Auburn University community by coordinating communications and outreach for the Department of Campus Safety and Security. Under the direction of the Director, Campus Safety & Compliance, the Communications Specialist will develop communication plans to promote personal safety and accountability and share the vision, mission, goals, and achievements of the department. The Communications Specialist will manage the department’s social media accounts, organize events to engage the campus community, and assist with department communications during emergency and crisis situations, serving as the department’s Public Information Officer.
Essential Functions
  • Develops and implements communication plans to promote personal safety and accountability and communicate the vision, mission, goals, and achievements of the Department of Campus Safety and Security. Ensures plans include strategies to reach all segments of the campus community.
  • Researches, designs, and develops content on a variety of safety subjects pertinent to the campus community for dissemination through a variety of mediums, such as internal or external publications, brochures, posters, social media, newsletters, websites, presentations, media releases, and more. Coordinates the production of materials to include content/style editing, designing, printing, photography, and/or copywriting. Coordinates calendars, production schedules, and deadlines, including coordination of work carried out by external vendors.
  • Coordinates departmental social media accounts and other methods of communication. Monitors social media during emergency events and high-profile incidents and assists with development of appropriate responses and strategies to share appropriate details.
  • Plans and organizes campus outreach efforts and other special events and meetings. May attend different events on campus as a department representative.
  • May be required to assist with emergency operations and communications for incidents impacting the campus.
  • Serves as the department’s Public Information Officer (PIO) and participates in community PIO networking groups. Coordinates with department leadership and the Office of Communications and Marketing on response to media requests.
  • Supervises the activities of a part-time student worker.

Minimum Education and Experience

Requirements for Additional Job Levels
  • Level II Bachelor’s degree in a discipline appropriate to the position with no experience.
  • Level III Bachelor’s degree in a discipline appropriate to the position plus 4 years experience.

Desired Qualifications

Desired Qualifications Candidate must have strong communication skills (written and verbal); organization skills; attention to detail; the ability to work and communicate effectively with a diverse group of individuals; and the demonstrated ability to handle sensitive information with discretion. Experience with website management, graphic design, and communicating with young adults on a variety of social media platforms preferred.
