Job summary

The Dyson School of Design Engineering is the 10th and newest engineering department at Imperial College London. The School brings together traditional engineering disciplines with areas such as behavioural science, design thinking, ethics, and business model innovation, to foster creativity and rigour in a single engineering discipline. The School is unique in its delivery of joint degrees with the Royal College of Art.

This new role of Communications and Events Coordinator in the School requires an experienced, highly competent, and enthusiastic individual with a diverse set of skills. The successful candidate will take a lead role in coordinating and managing events, promoting the School’s teaching and research activities to key internal and external stakeholders and working on the School’s website, social media communications and publications to the highest standards.

The post involves a high level of interaction with staff at all levels as well as students, thus requiring a professional approach with a friendly and welcoming manner. The successful candidate will work in concert with the main internal stakeholders, such as the senior management, the School Teaching Office, various programme leads, the research groups and academic staff. It will be essential to employ and maintain robust customer relationship management (CRM) tools, observing the necessary security and privacy protocols, towards the effective engagement of the School’s stakeholders, including its alumni.

We are looking for a proactive and independent individual able to work under their own direction with minimum supervision that thrives in a busy and fast paced environment. You should be an excellent communicator with an interest in science and technology and communication in the higher education sector.

Essential requirements

Essential Requirements:

· A degree, or equivalent, e.g. English, Journalism, Communications, STEM degrees, Science Communication, or equivalent experience

· Experience of writing content for different audiences and across a variety of media channels

· Experience of working with confidential stories and press embargoes

· Experience of communicating scientific information to academic and lay audiences

· Experience in developing and maintaining websites

· Experiencing of planning and managing a variety of events

· Experience of using web analytics tools and producing reports

· Experience of graphic design, image and/or video editing programmes/software

· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including being able to communicate information clearly and concisely, using appropriate IT packages where required

· Excellent organisational and time management skills with an ability to multitask and prioritise effectively

· Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to form effective working relationships both internally and outside of the Department

· Relationship management: polite and assertive approach towards an effective ability to manage expectations and define parameters / scope

· Ability to exercise tact and discretion, observe confidentiality and employ working practices and systems that promote data security

· Effective analytical and problem-solving skills

· Strong attention to detail

· IT skills – proven ability to use Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc. to a high level as well as having technical proficiency to pick up new IT packages quickly

· Proficiency in the Adobe Suite (Photoshop, InDesign) or similar design software packages

· Innovative, disciplined and able to demonstrate a proactive approach

· Ability to work flexibly particularly when deadlines need to be met

· Ability to work independently and as part of a team E

· Passion for writing and systems design as an agency for equality and diversity practice
