The Collections Management Lead Archivist, located within the Archival Technical Services unit at Ohio State University Libraries (University Libraries), leads the complex and collaborative work of the Collections Management program. The Collections Management Lead Archivist ensures the program consistently executes complex archival processing projects and collections management operations, which support the teaching and research objectives of University Libraries Special Collections units.  

 

The Collections Management Lead Archivist utilizes their archival processing and collections management experience, their thorough knowledge of archival standards and best practices, and their experience effectively developing and leading archival workflows to lead the Collections Management program and manage program resources. The Collections Management Lead Archivist routinely engages in communication with colleagues across University Libraries regarding program activities, including gathering the information necessary to effectively determine, set, and manage program priorities and objectives.  

 

The Collections Management Lead Archivist supervises two or more professional staff performing program activities, including: full archival processing, preliminary processing, archival description remediation and/or enhancement, storage and physical inventory management, and various other projects that support the lifetime custodial needs of archival materials held by the University Libraries Special Collections units. The Collections Management program works with archival materials in a wide range of size, format, and complexity, and the Collections Management Lead Archivist provides ongoing training, support, and feedback to program staff in all areas, enabling the program to effectively complete work with a high degree of accuracy. 

 

Additionally, the Collections Management Lead Archivist performs processing and/or collections management activities for the most complex materials entering program workflows. 

 

The Collections Management Lead Archivist consistently demonstrates commitment to Ohio State University Libraries values and promotes an organizational culture of Discovery, Connection, Equity, Integrity, and Stewardship (https://library.osu.edu/strategic-directions) as well as dedication to advance the work of the Archival Technical Services unit. All other duties as assigned. 

Required Qualifications:

Master’s degree in a relevant field focusing on archives, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Minimum of 8 years’ experience performing a combination of archival processing and archival collections management activities, including demonstrated experience successfully processing collections of high complexity. Minimum of 3 years’ supervisory experience. Demonstrated ability to apply the standards and best practices of the archival profession to develop, lead, and continuously refine workflows resulting in the successful execution of processing and/or archival collections management projects. Demonstrated ability to provide effective training for archival tasks, including the ability to hold others accountable for completing these tasks with a high degree of accuracy. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative environment.

Desired Qualifications:

Experience supervising staff performing archival processing and/or archival collections management activities. Experience managing budgets.

About the Department: 

 

The Archival Technical Services unit at The Ohio State University Libraries is comprised of two program areas: Intake & Accessioning and Collections Management. The unit is responsible for a broad range of archival activities, including, but not limited to: accessioning; creating, remediating, and maintaining archival description; processing; creating and maintaining appropriate materials housing; facilitating storage and retrieval of materials; managing archival projects; and coordinating archival operations and logistics in support of this work.  

 

The Archival Technical Services unit has direct responsibility for archival technical services activities for Thompson Library Special Collections units (Rare Books and Manuscripts Library, Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee Theatre Research Institute, Hilandar Research Library) and Archives units (University Archives, Ohio Public Policy Archives, Byrd Polar and Climate Research Center Archives), and collaborates with the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum on selected activities for their holdings.
