Description

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission has an opportunity for a highly motivated, enthusiastic person to fill a key role as the Project Coordinator for the Panhandle Dune Ecosystem Project. The individual selected for this position will have the opportunity to significantly influence restoration outcomes in the important coastal dune ecosystem of the Florida Panhandle. This is expected to be a 5-year position working on this grant-funded project. The Project Coordinator will have a lead role in the development and implementation of restoration activities conducted in the dynamic coastal dune ecosystem. This multi-agency project is focused on restoring natural vegetation diversity and connectivity in coastal dunes to benefit federally endangered beach mouse populations and other wildlife species. This position serves as a key team member who will organize and lead activities of the project team to carry-out restoration activities at multiple sites across the Florida Panhandle. This position provides a great opportunity to work creatively with diverse partners and stakeholders to address unique conservation challenges.

Coordinates regular meetings of the project team to select restoration sites, develop restoration plans, and ensure restoration work is conducted efficiently and as prescribed. Coordinates with other FWC staff members, land managers, and other conservation specialists to help ensure project activities are consistent with other planned or ongoing management and conservation activities.

Communicates and works effectively with the funding entity to ensure project activities are consistent with funding requirements. Takes a lead role in overseeing the project budget. Collaborates appropriately with staffs of other agencies, land managers, and property owners to maintain support for the project’s restoration work.

Takes a lead role, working with other project staff, in writing progress reports to meet funding requirements and other technical reports to disseminate the results of the restoration activities conducted for the project. Coordinates development and implementation of the Adaptive Management Plan for the project. Also works with the project team to ensure project files are organized and up to date.

Works with the project team and other FWC staff to produce public outreach messaging to inform the public about project activities and maintain public support for the project. As appropriate, gives presentations to build support for the project.

Education: Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the biological sciences is required, preferably in natural resource conservation, ecology, environmental science, or a closely related field. A Master’s degree in one of the listed fields is strongly preferred.

Qualifications

Knowledge: Of coastal dune ecosystems, Florida’s wildlife, and the principles of ecology, wildlife biology, and natural resource conservation, as well as applicable federal and state laws, rules, and policies.

Demonstrated interest, knowledge, and experience in natural resource conservation and management.

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience planning and implementing natural resource conservation activities. Experience incorporating field survey assessment protocols into planning processes for conservation activities is preferred. At least two years of professional experience, with Florida-based experienced preferred.

Demonstrated knowledge of and experience working with private, public agencies, non-profit organizations, and municipalities, and engaging effectively with partners to advance restoration projects and promote and develop effective collaborations.

Skills: Well-developed problem solving skills. Excellent all-around computer skills and proficiency with the suite of Microsoft programs. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communications skills including abilities to express thoughts clearly, write concisely, and conduct public speaking activities for diverse groups is preferred. Strong time management and information management skills.

Abilities: Enthusiastic and self-motivated to complete quality work on time. Strong ability to work independently with minimal supervision when appropriate. Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment on multiple tasks with varying deadlines. Ability to communicate consistently and effectively and to efficiently organize information and details. Ability to work effectively with other agency staff members, partners, and stakeholders to achieve desired results. Ability to evaluate processes and outcomes and adapt approaches accordingly. Ability to participate in moderately strenuous management and monitoring activities outdoors, to safely operate vehicles; to work at night, if necessary, and to travel overnight as needed.
