As of 1 April 2023, University Medicine Greifswald (UMG) offers

4 Clinician Scientist positions for residents in training &
2 Clinician Scientist positions for medical specialists

within the Clinician Scientist Program „Meeting the Challenges of Chronic Age-Related Diseases in Rural Areas“, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Association, DFG). The aim of the program is to join clinical training with scientific research in order to achieve specialist qualification and habilitation or habilitation-equivalent achievements. The scientific focus will be on UMG’s keyfields of research – community medicine, molecular medicine and digital health – as well as on translating research findings into medical care, especially in rural areas.

The internationally advertised program is aimed at excellent and high-performing young physicians with a doctorate who are employed in healthcare. During the 3-year funding period (specialists: 2-year funding period), Clinician Scientist Fellows are exempted from their clinical work by 50 % to carry out an experimental or epidemiological research project and to strengthen their personal scientific profile.

Research activities during the funding period are complemented by offers for professional qualification and networking as well as further training within the framework of a specially designed curriculum. Individual mentors will assist the fellows in their clinical, scientific and personal development. A detailed time concept coordinated with the head of the department ensures that research hours are observed. Up to five additional on-call duties per month may be carried out.

Eligible for application are residents in training (i.e. physicians without “Facharztanerkennung”) with a doctorate who are employed in clinical healthcare and dentists with a doctorate up to four years after completing their state examination (Clinician Scientist positions for residents in training); as well as medical specialists up to two years after completing their specialist training (Clinician Scientist positions for medical specialists). In this case, higher requirements are placed on the application (e.g. submission of at least two first/last authorships in original publications). The German licence to practise medicine (“Approbation”) is mandatory for every application.

Candidate selection will be based on personal motivation and scientific aptitude of the applicant, originality of the research project, relation to age-related diseases and medical care in rural areas, as well as previous publications and third-party funding of the working group to which the application relates.
