THE HEART RESEARCH INSTITUTE (HRI) is an internationally recognised Medical Research Institute that performs ground-breaking cardiovascular research from our state-of-the-art facilities located in Newtown. For over 20 years, The HRI has been one of Australia’s leading research organisations working to detect, prevent and treat heart disease. Through our research, The HRI has made significant findings that have changed the way we live with and treat cardiovascular disease.

The Stroke Prevention Research Group at the Heart Research Institute is located in The Charles Perkins Centre at the University of Sydney. We are running a running a large randomised control trial, screening for atrial fibrillation in collaboration with Cambridge University and Oxford University in the United Kingdom. This project, “SAFER-AUS”, aims to find out whether a national screening program for AF is: (i) possible/achievable; (ii) will prevent strokes; and (iii) is good value for money for the Australian healthcare system.

We are seeking a Nurse, Allied Health Professional or someone with other relevant qualifications and experience whose main responsibility will be to manage patient recruitment and deliver the screening intervention. The recruitment and intervention will both be performed remotely using telehealth. You will be a part of the Stroke Prevention Research Group and will work closely with the NHMRC Clinical Trials Centre. This role represents an excellent opportunity to be involved in a major cardiovascular research project. The position is full time for 12 months with possibility of extension and will be based at the Charles Perkins Centre, University of Sydney. Part time hours will be considered for the right candidate.

Key Accountabilities

  • Participant recruitment in collaboration with general practice staff

  • Remote delivery of the screening intervention for people aged 70 years and over

  • High standard of interpersonal and communication skills

  • Accurate and detailed data entry and database management

  • Work alongside the multidisciplinary study research team

Essential Criteria:

  • Relevant Health Professional qualification (e.g. Nursing, Allied Health, Public Health); and current registration with the relevant professional body

  • Excellent communication skills with patients and health professionals

  • Demonstrated ability to explain general medicine concepts and terminology to a lay population

  • Experience with database entry and management

  • Excellent written communication skills

  • Good organisational and time management skills

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience in a clinical research setting, scientific research and/or conducting clinical trials

  • Experience working in the field of Cardiovascular Disease

  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, and research or commercial software (REDCap, R, SAS, SPSS etc)

  • Experience with manuscript and report writing
