Clinical Research Fellow

You will work on research to evaluate a PET imaging biomarker for neuropathological changes in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease

About the role

You will work on research to evaluate a PET imaging biomarker for neuropathological changes in the earliest stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Mitochondrial dysfunction appears to be an early consequence of AD pathology. The novel PET radioligand [18F]BCPP binds to mitochondrial complex I to provide a measure of mitochondrial density. Pilot work preceding this study has shown reduction of [18F]BCPP PET ligand binding throughout the brain cortex of people with early AD in association with reduced cerebral blood flow. This study would confirm these observations and extend them to explore ligand binding in people at high risk but without clinical expression of dementia.

What you would be doing

The work will be predominantly clinical. There also will be opportunities to perform image analysis and wider in silico molecular and epidemiological analyses related to testing the hypothesis more fully. Clinically, you will be responsible for participant recruitment, assessment, injection with radioligand as needed on scanning days (after suitable training), maintaining records and ensuring compliance of the study with expectations of regulatory bodies and the sponsor and in drafting the final study report.

What we are looking for

The post holder will hold an honorary clinical contract with the appropriate NHS Trust/s and may take on clinical responsibilities appropriate to their level of experience and expertise. You will have:

  • Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) with GMC registration
  • Experience in neurological and general medical assessment

What we can offer you

The role will be part of the UK Dementia Research Institute and the Department of Brain Sciences at Imperial College London. Clinical Research Fellows enjoy excellent career development opportunities with:

  • Research and educational opportunities for clinicals provided by the Imperial Clinical Academic Training Office (CATO)
  • Access to a range of cutting edge technologies
  • Strong national links through the UK DRI with attendance at its annual scientific meeting ‘Connectome’
  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: Gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 39 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
