The National Heart and Lung Institute are delighted to seek applications for a 3-year Clinical Research Fellow post in cardiomyopathy, heart failure and cardiovascular magnetic resonance based at the Royal Brompton campus. The successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to undertake a post-graduate degree during the post.

The candidate will be supervised by Dr Brian Halliday (Clinical Senior Lecturer in Cardiomyopathy and CMR) and Professor Sanjay Prasad (Professor of Cardiomyopathy) and coordinate a BHF-funded clinical trial investigating therapy for heart failure remission in dilated cardiomyopathy. This work builds on the PIs’ landmark TRED-HF trial which has shaped international heart failure guidelines and informed global clinical practice.

The candidate will be trained in clinical trials, cardiomyopathy, and cardiovascular magnetic resonance at the world-renowned Royal Brompton Hospital and NHLI.

Duties and responsibilities

  • To work with the principal investigators to screen and enrol participants, carry out baseline and follow-up visits, supervise CMR scans and collect and record data in an accurate and systematic way
  • To complete and comply with reporting and progress requirements as requested by the funder
  • To work with the principal investigators to complete and update applications and reports to appropriate regulatory and ethical bodies
  • To work with the trial statistician and colleagues to complete trial data analysis in a robust and scientific manner
  • To present findings to colleagues at internal and external meetings (travelling within the UK and abroad)
  • To draft publications for submission to peer reviewed journals
  • You will be responsible for accurate record keeping and documentation of results, and for preparing research reports and papers arising from his/her research

Essential requirements

  • Fully GMC registered Doctor (or eligible for full registration) in training in the UK
  • Medical qualification: MBBS, MM BCh or equivalent
  • Member of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP)
  • Evidence of outstanding academic and/or outstanding research achievements e.g. degrees, presentations at meetings, publications, awards and prizes. The evidence must demonstrate the potential to achieve the highest standards of scientific research and maintain an independent, high-profile academic research career
  • Evidence of participation in research e.g. clinical audit, clinical protocols; clinical guidelines; clinical service quality improvement initiatives; experience during student electives, intercalated degrees and academic clinical fellowships
  • Hold a current fitness to practice certificate, registration with licence to practice (or equivalent) from the relevant regulatory authority
  • Hold a current medical indemnity policy that is valid where the training will occur
  • Experience with the interpretation of imaging studies such as echo and cardiovascular magnetic resonance

Further information

This is a Full Time and Fixed Term post for 3 years based at Royal Brompton Campus with travel to other campuses as required.

Salary upon appointment will also include an additional London Weighting Allowance of £2,162 per annum (pro rata if applicable)

Please note, if you’re not on an approved NHS training programme you will be appointed on the Clinical staff not holding consultant contracts salary scale.
