Clinical Research Assistant, Psychiatry, Cumming School of Medicine

Position Overview

The Department of Psychiatry

 in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Clinical Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Reporting to the Principal Investigator.

The Clinical Research Assistant will participate and assist with aspects of ongoing research, including recruitment and assessment of participants, data entry and data base management.  The Clinical Research Assistant will also be required to liaise with, and potentially travel to, different clinics and departments within the university and Foothills Hospital as well as other hospitals in Calgary that are participating in recruitment for a large research biobank.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Patient and community-based contact related to recruitment, enrollment and ongoing study participation of both healthy and patient population

  • Organize a Biobank patient database including data entry, extraction and archiving

  • Organize and maintain all research patient records according to research policies and guidelines

  • Coordinates, monitors and ensures the implementation and enforcement of Biobank rules and procedures

  • Conduct consenting sessions and assessment interviews with participants

  • Manage the flow of study participants and be responsible for having assessments completed thoroughly and on time

  • Collect bio specimens from patients in clinics or laboratories

  • Organize shipping of bio specimens according biospecimen transferring SOPs

  • Provide effective and professional assistance to patient and staff inquiries in a courteous, timely and professional manner, demonstrating friendly, complete, competent customer service and support at all times and in all situations

  • Complete case report forms on time and accurately

  • Maintain patient confidentiality

  • Ensure that confidentiality of data collected and stored are maintained

  • Liaise with other clinics and departments on a regular basis to ensure ongoing recruitment support and provide them with necessary support

  • Complete assigned tasks in a timely and professional manner and take some accountability for local progress of the project

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with a preference for training within a health related field
  • Requires a minimum of 2-3 years of related experience in a clinical research area at an academic institution, including interaction with patients and clinical personnel (nurses, technicians and physicians)
  • Familiarity and previous experience working and supporting Health Canada regulated clinical trials will be considered an asset
  • Familiarity with standard research rating scales for mental health is essential, as well as experience in working with a clinical population with mental illness
  • Strong working knowledge and previous training in REDCap and/or other data management platforms is essential
  • Alberta Drivers License, as position requires the ability to travel to different location within Calgary for recruitment and study procedures
  • Ability to accommodate variable working hours including early mornings and evenings (no weekends or holidays work required)
  • Training and experience in phlebotomy for research will be considered an asset
  • Ability to deal with simultaneous priorities and competing timelines in an effective, efficient and professional manner
  • Requires strong organizational and time management skills, accuracy, and strong attention to detail
  • Knowledge of electronic medical records and proficient computer skills; experience using Word, Excel, Teams, OneDrive
