An opportunity has arisen in the Centre for Medical Education within the School of Medicine for a Clinical Lecturer in Dermatology. The main focus of the role is to deliver high-quality, research-informed teaching (and activities relating to teaching), including the development, delivery and evaluation of the Postgraduate Taught (PGT) programmes, undergraduate MBBCh, Medical Pharmacology BSc & Intercalated BSc programmes of study within the School.

There is also a requirement to supervise and support PGT and undergraduate students and to carry out academic administrative duties within the programmes as required. They will lead specific PGT modules, teaching, learning, assessment and feedback in their specialty area(s) as directed by the Programme Director(s) to whom they report and the Dean of Medical Education (and/or the Dean’s appointed deputies).

The post holder will also contribute to scholarship and research in the area of Higher Education through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.

The successful applicant will hold an Honorary Contract with a local NHS Health Board to provide clinical services and undertake two Clinical Sessions per week.

Applicants should hold an MBBCh (or equivalent eg MBBS), full GMC registration and a licence to practice and be able to demonstrate significant teaching experience in the area of Dermatology, Medicine and/or Medical Science (or an equivalent biomedical science subject) at postgraduate and/or undergraduate level.

Applicants should also have excellent communication and IT skills, to include the ability to present complex and conceptual basic science topics clearly and confidently to others, using high-level skills and a range of media. (Please see the job description for full information)

It is desirable that applicants will hold a Postgraduate qualification in teaching or equivalent qualification or evidence (e.g. Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy, Academy of Medical Educators (or similarly recognised professional educator body).

This position is part-time (32 hours per week), fixed term until 30 June 2024 and available immediately.

Work Pattern – It is anticipated that the Clinical Sessions will take place on Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday morning.

Salary: £36,941 – £63,961 per annum, pro rata (Clinical Grade D1).

Main function

To undertake research-informed teaching (and activities relating to teaching), including the development, delivery and evaluation of the Postgraduate Taught (PGT) programmes, undergraduate MBBCh, Medical Pharmacology BSc & Intercalated BSc programmes of study within the School. To supervise and support PGT and undergraduate students and to carry out academic administrative duties within the programmes as required. To pursue excellence in research-informed teaching and inspire and enable others to do the same.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching

•    Lead specific PGT modules, teaching, learning, assessment and feedback in their specialty area(s) as directed by the Programme Director(s) to whom they report and the Dean of Medical Education (and/or the Dean’s appointed deputies).
•    Lead undergraduate MBBCh Phase components, Medical Pharmacology BSc, Intercalated BSc and PGT modules and independently contribute to research-informed teaching related activities within those programmes.
•    Supervise & facilitate the academic work of students including undergraduate Medical & BSc students and postgraduate taught (PGT) students.
•    Supervise and assess MSc dissertations and student projects undertaken by PGT, Medical & BSc students.
•    Develop teaching and learning activities related to their own specialist area(s) and integrate with the requirements/mission of the taught programmes in the School of Medicine.
•    Provide pastoral care and academic support by acting as a Personal Tutor for PGT students and BSc students and an Academic Mentor for MBBCh students.
•    Carry out work associated with MBBCh, PGT & BSc assessments (i.e. the setting and marking of papers, coursework and online assessments and providing constructive, timely feedback to students).
Scholarship
•    Contribute to scholarship and research in the area of Higher Education through participation in conferences, seminars and other academic and professional forums to disseminate the results of individual scholarship.
•    Engage in scholarly activity through journal articles and/or outputs which advance knowledge within the area of work.
•    Contribute to scholarship through interdisciplinary working with individuals and teams within, and external to, the wider university community.
•    Carry out other forms of scholarship including work associated with PGT, MBBCh & BSc programmes, including administration and participation in associated committee work.

Clinical
•    For NHS clinical duties, the post holder will be responsible to the Clinical Director and professionally accountable to the Medical Director.
•    To hold an honorary contract with the relevant NHS Trust(s)
•    To comply fully with all NHS policies, guidelines and procedures.
•    To provide a clinical service, including out-patient clinics, as agreed with the Director of the Centre for Medical Education and relevant Clinical Director, via the joint job planning process.  This will include direct clinical care and supporting professional activities.
•    To provide academic clinical leadership in a relevant aspect of your area of specialism
•    To ensure that arrangements are in place, at all times, for adequate medical staff to be available in relation to the treatment and care of patients.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

1. MBBCh (or equivalent eg MBBS), full GMC registration and a licence to practice.

2. Subject specialist knowledge in Dermatology.

3. Knowledge of current structures, frameworks, standards and expectations in Postgraduate Medical Education, especially those relevant to their specialty area(s).

4. Evidence of teaching and supervising students in a clinical/practical/laboratory-based environment and of teaching and supervising students in an online environment.

Pastoral, Communication and Team Working

5. Excellent communication and IT skills, including the ability to present complex and basic scientific topics clearly and confidently to others, using high level skills and a range of media.

6. The ability to provide appropriate pastoral and academic support to students by appreciating the needs of individual learners and their circumstances.

7. Ability to act as module leader and co-ordinate with other staff to ensure student needs and expectations are met.

8. Ability to undertake appropriate academic administrative tasks associated with the programmes of study.

Clinical 

9. Demonstrable knowledge of clinical governance, research governance, good clinical practice criteria and educational theory.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

This post is offered by the School of Medicine’s Centre for Medical Education (C4ME). The C4ME has administrative jurisdiction for all taught programmes of study emanating from the School of Medicine.

The post is weighted towards providing teaching support for PGT programmes but it is expected that the appointee will also contribute appropriate teaching to components of the 5 year MBBCh programme, the 3 year Medical Pharmacology and 1 year Intercalated BSc programmes (indicative workload division- 90% PGT : 10% MBBCh / BSc / Intercalated BSc activity). 

For any roles associated with teaching activities, there is a requirement to hold or undertake the University’s Academic Practice modules, or to hold or seek other professionally recognised qualifications in HEI teaching. This will be factored into the appointee’s job plan and appropriate support offered by the School’s Academy of Teaching.
