Summary

General Description: 

Under the direction of the Resident Director, the Director of Behavioral Health serves as a clinician educator, ensuring high-quality teaching, scholarship, and patient care in support of ACGME accreditation and the care standards of the University of Michigan.   Committee service, curriculum development and oversight, wellness facilitation, resident advising, research and scholarship, and attendance at all residency events is expected. This faculty member will provide integrated behavioral healthcare to the patients within residency continuity clinics. The Director of Behavioral Health is expected to function as a full-time/core faculty member and to support the success of the residency program mission, goals, and objectives, with 55% FTE clinical effort, and 45% administrative and educational effort.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

• Serve as coordinator of a longitudinal behavioral medicine curriculum for family medicine residency program including development, implementation, and evaluation.
• Implementation of integrated clinical services, such as diagnostic assessment, psychotherapy, crisis assessment and intervention, brief psychoeducation and intervention as part of integrated care visits, and health and behavior coaching.
• Teaching, clinical and didactic, on behavioral health topics.
• Behavioral precepting.
• Shadowing (visits, rounding, video data, or other) family medicine residents with focus on teaching patient centered communication skills and assessment of behavioral health issues. Assess residents’ interaction and problem-solving skills through direct observation of resident’s clinical work and communication. Help residents develop individual education plans to optimize their effectiveness in communication and professionalism.
• Provide instruction to residents on basic counseling skills such as motivational interviewing and CBT.
• Participation in resident evaluation and milestone-based competencies.
• Collaborate with Wellness Committee in planning and facilitating resident wellness activities.
• Service on residency Clinical Competency Committee (CCC) to review resident performance, in order to provide support to residents with coaching or mentoring.
• Participate in residency administration, including attending Principal Faculty (core residency faculty) meetings and committees.
• Attend faculty, medical staff, and clinic meetings, with participation in and development of faculty development activities.
• Participate in recruitment and interview of residency applicants.
• Perform other activities related to administrative, clinical, and teaching roles.
• Service on other committees and administrative assignments as needed.
• Conduct scholarly activity according to ACGME requirements, including research as appropriate and time permits, including mentoring resident scholarly activity.
• Mentor and advise residents.

Required Qualifications*

• PhD or PsyD in psychology, marital and family therapy, or related field.
• Licensed or eligible for licensure as psychologist or therapist in the state of Michigan.
• Experience providing psychological assessment and intervention.

Desired Qualifications*

• Experience in providing integrated care with a team of physicians and working with teams of health care providers.
• Experience with family medicine residency education.
• Experience conducting research in primary care and behavioral health.
