Job Summary:

This position is situated within the Danida funded SPA programme, managed by ActionAid Denmark, and will be working as part of a team of staff spread across the world. The position holder will play a pivotal role in advancing the objectives of the global programme on climate justice, which encompasses twelve different countries in Africa and Asia, focusing on empowering marginalised and vulnerable youth to influence climate change policies and investments at a Regional and Global level. This involves coordinating and engaging in international and regional advocacy efforts, providing policy and advocacy support to colleagues and partner organisations in a multitude of countries, and developing well-researched policy positions. Additionally, they will lead capacity-building initiatives on climate justice issues, contribute to planning and reporting processes within the global climate justice programme unit, and nurture strategic external partnerships. Representing the organisation at various forums and contributing to fundraising activities are also key responsibilities. Collaboration with other units within the organisation’s international cluster, such as the Social Movements (MOVE) team and Global Platform Secretariat, is essential for synergistic outcomes. Overall, this role demands a blend of strategic thinking, advocacy skills, research acumen, and collaborative spirit to drive impactful change in climate justice initiatives on a global scale.

Key responsibilities include (not limited to):

International and regional Advocacy:

  • Develop and support the implementation of advocacy strategies aimed at influencing regional bodies to increase support for initiatives such as agroecology and renewable energy projects led by communities.
  • Support advocacy efforts aimed at persuading public, private, and institutional investors to redirect investments from harmful fossil fuels and agribusiness towards more sustainable alternatives.
  • Assist in national advocacy efforts, including those related to National Determine Contribution (NDC).
  • Provide external representation as necessary.

International Capacity Building:

  • Work on building the capacity of ActionAid offices and partners worldwide to engage effectively on the issues addressed in the global climate justice programme.

Teamwork:

  • Contribute to the overall functioning of the team, including planning, reporting, financial management, and organisation of working group calls and face-to-face meetings.

Policy and Research:

  • Draft or contribute to shorter briefings for internal and potentially external use.

Strategic Leadership and People Management:

  • Develop a team culture that values collaboration internally, cross functionally and in partnership with countries.

Relationships

The Climate Justice Advisor reports to Head of Policy, Evidence & Fundraising, ActionAid Denmark and the task manager is the Climate Justice Programme Manager, ActionAid Denmark. The incumbent will collaborate with ActionAid Country Programmes, primarily in Africa but also in Asia. As the Climate Justice Advisor is based in Bangladesh, s/he needs to maintain functional relationship with HROD, Finance, Admin and other relevant function and programme units of ActionAid Bangladesh.

Required Educational Qualification and Experiences

Education

  • Postgraduate / Graduate degree, preferably in relevant field.

Experience

  • At least 5 years of relevant working experience.
  • Experience in working with external agencies in the management of child protection and safeguarding-related concerns.
  • Experience in delivery of training to different internal and external stakeholders about safeguarding, including child protection.

Required Competencies

Desirable:

  • Knowledge of climate issues from an intersectional feminist and justice perspective
  • Knowledge of agroecology and land use from a justice perspective
  • Experience of leading advocacy work in an NGO setting
  • Experience of primary and field research including in vulnerable communities
  • Working knowledge of French, Portuguese or Arabic would be an advantage
  • Experience of working in partnerships and networks
  • Experience in capacity building and knowledge sharing

Personal qualities

  • Commitment to feminist leadership and team work
  • Clear comfort and aptitude for cross-cultural working
  • Experience of creating, articulating and implementing a vision and solutions for effective team working across a diverse group of stakeholders.
