Job Description

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at ASU seeks to hire one Climate and Health Research Professional to support collaborative efforts to understand and reduce the adverse public health impacts of extreme heat and other climate hazards in Arizona. The position will support the Building Resilience Against Climate Effects program in Arizona, working closely with the state health department, local health departments, city governments, non profits, and other university partners.

Salary Range

$48,000 – $58,000 per year; DOE

Essential Duties

  • Conduct technical analysis of climate and health data sets to understand community impacts of climate hazards
  • Support evaluation of public health interventions using appropriate quantitative and qualitative techniques
  • Meet periodic state and federal reporting requirements
  • Contribute to the development of public and professional presentations, project reports, and scientific manuscripts
  • Meet regularly with project collaborators and external partners
  • Manage routine administrative tasks including meeting scheduling and planning, budget management, public communications, and supervision of student research assistants

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND two years related research experience; OR, Six years research experience appropriate to the area of assignment; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of a Master’s degree in geography, public health, environmental sciences, urban planning, GIS, climatology, or related fields
  • Experience in spatial analysis, GIS, and multivariate statistics
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local and regional climate and health programs and relevant organizations
  • Experience developing scientific reports and presentations
  • Experience working with underserved communities
  • Experience in project management

Working Environment

  • Most activities will be completed in an office setting.
  • Some duties will take place at indoor and outdoor community locations and will involve direct public engagement. Remote/telework arrangements may be considered.

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) is a major participant in the instructional and research activities of Arizona State University. A staff team of ten supports 33 tenure/tenure-track faculty including four members of the National Academy of Sciences, approximately 1,000 undergraduate majors (split between campus and online) and 200 graduate students studying in one of five graduate degree programs (MA and PhD programs in Geography, a PhD in Urban Planning, a Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning and a Master of Advanced Studies in Geographical Information Systems) as well as graduate certificate programs in GIS and transportation. SGSUP has grown quickly in the past year, especially via online enrollment, and more new programs are due to launch on-campus and online in the next two years.
