Working for the Department/Faculty

The University of Alberta Utilities department is responsible for supplying Utility services to the Great Campus Area including steam, chilled water, power, domestic water, natural gas, compressed air and demineralized water. Utilities also maintains the storm and sanitary collection system for the great campus area.  

Position

Reporting to the Chilled Water Systems Supervisor, the Chilled Water Systems Millwright is responsible for the continued maintenance and repair of a variety of fixed and rotating equipment related to the Operation of the University Chilled Water Plants – Central Cooling Plant, Cooling Plant on Campus and the Thermal Energy Storage Facility.   

The Chilled Water Systems millwright is required to extend themselves beyond the traditional area of millwrighting, to other mechanical trades such a refrigeration, and pipefitting. 

Duties

  • Inspects, tests, services and evaluates equipment and components such as pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, large and small diameter valves, couplings, etc.
  • Performs preventive maintenance on rotating equipment and compressors; Updates information on equipment condition, work done, tests performed, parts replaced, etc. in order to build and maintain a historic database of the equipment.
  • Troubleshoots equipment using visual, audio equipment, vibration analysis and laser alignment tools.
  • Works closely with other trades and other University personnel to safely isolate and prepare equipment for maintenance.
  • Leads the analysis of and determines the cause of equipment failures (motors, pumps, compressors, fans, large diameter valves).  Recommends remedial measures to Supervisor/Foreman and implements the necessary repairs or modifications.
  • Repairs motors, pumps, compressors, fans, large diameter valves, generators, gear boxes and transmissions within the Chilled Water Plants or Service Corridor.
  • Reconditions equipment which can include but is not limited to replacing bearings, welding damaged parts, fabricating new parts, etc.
  • Repairs or modifies piping, flanges, valves, seals, etc. to minimize refrigerant leaks.
  • Disassembles and works safely on equipment ranging in size from a few pounds to 10 tons.
  • Maintains maintenance records using various software programs including but not limited to Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Fabricates non-standard parts from blueprints, drawings, self-designed plans and verbal instruction.
  • Undertakes the installation of new equipment or modification of existing equipment;
  • Interprets drawings and plans and laying out and developing projects according to specifications;
  • On a rotational basis, provides standby relief coverage to deal with problems that occur in the off hours with operations and equipment.  This includes providing backup operations if required, and assisting plant operators in an emergency.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid Alberta Journeyman Millwright Certificate
  • High School Diploma
  • A minimum of four years’ related experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong communication and decision making skills.
  • Knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Legislation.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Valid Class 5 Drivers license.
  • Clean drivers abstract
  • Good time management skills

This position is subject to the Letter of Understanding – Market Supplement for Utilities. This means that a market supplement in the form of a salary increase of one grade applies to the position.
