Chief of Staff

Join the senior leadership team for the NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study , and be part of a vibrant community of faculty, administrators, students, and alumni as Chief of Staff to the Dean of Gallatin. NYU Gallatin recently celebrated its 50th anniversary as a rigorous, interdisciplinary liberal arts research and teaching institution. We seek a Chief of Staff who will join us in extending NYU Gallatin’s trailblazing work into its next half century.

The Chief of Staff will serve as principal aide for the Dean of Gallatin, addressing high-level issues, policies and situations involving a cross-section of School and University units, and will play a key role in strategic planning for the School. The Chief of Staff will also oversee the communications and events teams of the School and help set the direction for both internal and external programming, ensuring alignment with School priorities.

The successful candidate will bring a demonstrated commitment to the mission of interdisciplinary liberal arts education; extensive experience in communications and events management; and skills in project management and prioritization, as well as strengths in discretion and professionalism, management and collaboration, policy and procedure, and budgeting and financial analysis. Candidates should also demonstrate strong research, writing and presentation skills, the ability to communicate sensitive information diplomatically both orally and in writing, and should enjoy forging partnerships, building relationships, and amassing support from internal and external constituencies.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s Degree
Preferred Education:
Master’s Degree
Required Experience:
7+ years of increasing responsibility in academic administration, government or comparable setting. Must have prior experience with operational and staff supervision.
Preferred Experience:
Experience directing the operations of an academic dean’s office.
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Ability to exercise sound judgment and excellent discretion; able to maintain confidentiality; ability to develop, implement and interpret policies and procedures. Excellent organizational, conflict resolution, and problem-solving skills. Strong research, writing and presentation skills and the ability to communicate sensitive information diplomatically both orally and in writing to individuals at all levels. Ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of stakeholders in a multi-constituency environment. Ability to lead diverse, inter-departmental initiatives and manage and prioritize complex projects. Ability to forge partnerships, build relationships, and garner support from community and external constituencies to ensure that people and departments work together smoothly. Advanced word processing, database, and spreadsheet software, and online and traditional information databases. Basic skills in budgeting and financial analysis.
