DESCRIPTION
The Certification Officer oversees the certification of candidates from undergraduate and graduate educator preparation programs and communicates changes in certification requirements and assessments associated with those changes to all stakeholders. This position is responsible for serving as the certifying agent for the University in compliance with the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The Certification officer maintains appropriate documentation for all students in certificate programs to ensure that they meet all qualifications in compliance with TEA accreditation requirements. The certification officer will participate in professional organizations and attend professional development opportunities as it pertains to their role.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collects, manages, and analyzes data to demonstrate compliance with policies and requirements of the University, individual education programs, the Texas Education Agency and other accrediting bodies.
- Monitors and maintains ASEP (Accountability System for Educator Preparation) for certification applicants, verifies eligibility, and recommends teacher candidates to TEA for certification.
- Performs system administration responsibilities within the ASEP administrative system.
- Attends State and University meetings regarding teacher certification requirement updates and acts as a resource for Educator Preparation Program (EPP) certification across the University.
- Completes certification documents, communicates certification information to all student teacher candidates, and monitors candidates’ required assessments for certification.
- Provides certification information to programs and responds to information requests from faculty, staff, school district administration, and candidates regarding initial certification.
- Remains competent and current through self-directed professional reading, developing professional contacts with colleagues, attending professional development courses, and attending training and/or courses required and recommended by the Dean and Texas Education Agency.
- Maintains and administers the Teacher education application information system.
- Maintains the Test Approval Request (TAR) System to secure student Texas Examinations of Educator Standards (TExES) Certification Exam registration and provide registration information for undergraduate and graduate students in reference to State Certification Testing.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in applicable field.
- Three (3) years of related experience.
- Intermediate skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
- Knowledge of University, State, and Federal laws, regulations, and policies. Knowledge of the Family Education Rights Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others. Ability to communicate clearly and effectively to ensure understanding. Excellent organizational skills.
- Travel is required for conferences.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- At least five years of related experience in a college or university or a minimum of five years of experience as a teacher or administrator in a K-12 school setting.
