The Community Engagement Centers (CECs), staffed by the University, are embedded in neighborhoods to work in collaboration with community partners and residents to organize and deploy the involvement of Pitt faculty, staff, students and alumni through various community-serving programs and initiatives.

The Center Director must advance the purpose of the CEC initiative through leadership of the Hill District-based CEC. The Center Director facilitates collaborations between community organizations, community residents, Pitt researchers, staff, and students, supports the CEC’s affiliated neighborhood activities, and oversees daily operations of the neighborhood-based CEC and the staff housed within the CEC.The CEC Center Director will work directly in partnership with organizations and leaders of the neighborhood to ensure the attainment of goals of both community and University.

The director must be a trusted resource to community leadership as well as to University faculty and staff. In order to meet these objectives, the Center Director must be able to establish a high level of trust, possess outstanding written and oral communication skills, be skilled in relationship building and collaboration, be familiar with community-engaged learning and research, be able to work in diverse environments, and possess personnel and program management experience.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for addressing inequities, and interest in digital inclusion/access & STEAM initiatives. Knowledge of the social, political, and economic dynamics of Pittsburgh, and specifically those of Hill District, is preferred.

The Center Director will:

  • Ensure the center is an active part of the community in which it sits, participating fully in the life of the community
  • Facilitate collaborations between community organizations and residents, activities, and Pitt faculty, staff, and students so that they can develop programs that will serve the community and simultaneously assist Pitt in fulfilling its university mission
  • Organize and deploy University involvement in the CEC and neighborhood, across the diversity of schools, programs, units, researchers, faculty, staff, students, and alumni
  • Oversee the daily operations of the CEC and ensure it maintains an inclusive, vibrant, and welcoming culture that is consistent with the neighborhood


Minimum Education Level Required: 

  • Educational background (Bachelor’s required, Master’s preferred) in social work, public administration, education, or a related field.

Minimum Experience Level Required: 

  • At least 6 years working in and with community-based organizations or facilitating community-university partnerships. Years of working experience in excess of the experience level required can be considered in lieu of education requirement per University guidelines.
