CDL Driver

The University of Maryland, Baltimore School of Nursing is seeking a part-time CDL Driver. Under direct supervision, the Driver operates and maintains the Governor’s Wellmobile vehicle. The Governor’s Wellmobile Program is a mobile health care clinic that travels one (1) day a week from Baltimore to four sites in Prince George’s County providing services. The Wellmobile also serves as a training site for the University of Maryland School of Nursing for expanding student learning opportunities in caring for underserved populations. In addition to driving to and from the sites, the driver is responsible for day-to-day vehicle-related operations and maintenance.

This position is eligible for a $3,000 sign-on bonus. Half will be paid within the first 30 days of employment and half will be paid at the end of the contract. Current UMB employees are not eligible for the sign-on bonus.

Please note: Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement is required for this position.

PRIMARY DUTIES:

  • Transports passengers and delivers equipment, materials, and documents to various sites ensuring safe delivery.
  • Operates automobiles, buses, vans, and/or trucks. 
  • Loads and unloads equipment and materials. 
  • Maintains adequate fuel levels, Records fuel and oil consumption, mileage, hourly operation, and maintenance activities. 
  • Maintains all records pertaining to vehicle operation such as, but not limited to, scheduled trips, transported materials, and maintenance. Files monthly reports with the UMB Office of Procurement.
  • Ensures operational readiness of equipment and performs basic preventive maintenance such as replacing wipers and cleaning vehicle interior and exterior.
  • Maintains ongoing routine and preventative maintenance of the vehicles, scheduling and driving the vehicle to and from repair shops for needed inspections and servicing. 
  • Completes daily pre and post safety checks and related documentation.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

  

EDUCATION: N/A.

EXPERIENCE: One year as a driver. One year of experience as a CDL driver and exemplary driving record preferred.

OTHER: Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake designation. If required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License, employees will be subjected to drug and alcohol education and testing as required under Federal Highway Administration and the State of Maryland regulations. Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of the care and operation of automotive transportation vehicles. Demonstrated working knowledge and expertise in the care and operation of CDL vehicles and generator power for the clinic when the vehicle is parked preferred.
  • Skilled in driving in all types of weather and road conditions.
  • Organizational and good communication skills are required to maintain the operational conditions in the clinic (physical space, maintaining par levels for office, medical supplies and equipment is required).
  • Ability to read and write, to understand and follow oral and written instructions, to assist passengers, and lift heavy objects.
  • Proficiency in computer applications and connectivity is preferred.
  • Fluency in Spanish (spoken and written) is preferred.

Conditions Of Employment:
