About this opportunity  

The successful appointees will undertake delivery of tutorials with associated preparation, student consultation and marking in first year, second year, third year and postgraduate economics courses.

This position is based at the St Lucia Campus and successful appointees must be available to attend on campus.

Casual Academic staff are remunerated according to the category of their duties, as detailed in UQ’s Enterprise Agreement and reiterated in this job profile.   

Casual Tutoring

Tutorial means any educational delivery described as a tutorial in a course or unit outline, or in an official timetable issued by the employer. A Casual Academic staff member may be required to deliver or present a tutorial (or equivalent delivery through other than face-to-face teaching mode) of a specified duration and relatedly provide non-contact duties in the nature of preparation, directly-associated and concurrent marking (see enterprise agreement), and student consultation.  These non-contact duties will be directly associated with, and arising from, the delivery of a specific tutorial.

Tutoring responsibilities may include (but are not limited to):

  • Preparing and delivering theoretical and/or practical tutorials which are engaging, context-relevant and where possible, participative  

  • Tutoring students in both face to face and online delivery modes as appropriate to the discipline and context

  • Providing support to students, including, consultation, and assessment feedback

  • Undertaking marking of assessment tasks, as directed by course coordinators, with hours for marking to be confirmed by School Administration staff prior to commencing marking. (Note: marking will be paid in addition to other tutorial duties.)

  • Maintaining, and where possible improving, the quality of tutorials, as measured through evaluation instruments to meet industry and educational standards.

  • Providing tutorial support for other positions during planned or unexpected absences.

  • Understanding and applying University Rules relevant to teaching and learning practice.

  • Maintaining class participation and attendance lists as required.

  • Maintaining a high level of performance on evaluations by students.

  • Attending meetings, induction sessions or required training sessions

All casual academic staff are required to comply with legislation and University policy relevant to the duties undertaken, including but not exclusive to:

  • The University’s Code of Conduct .

  • Requirements of the Queensland occupational health and safety (OH&S) legislation and related OH&S responsibilities and procedures developed by the University or Institute/School.

  • The adoption of sustainable practices in all work activities and compliance with associated legislation and related University sustainability responsibilities and procedures .

  • Requirements of the Education Services  for Overseas Students Act 2000, the National Code 2007 and associated legislation, and related responsibilities and procedures developed by the University.

 About the School of Economics

About You

Applicants should possess strong academic background in economics at UQ achieving a GPA of 6.0 or better in economics courses.

The candidate must have completed at least 2-3 years of undergraduate study, including 16 units (8 courses) of ECON-coded courses, OR at least one semester full time of postgraduate study, including  8 units (4 courses) of ECON-coded courses. 

Economics Honours and PhD candidates are encouraged to apply. 

What we can offer  

This is a Casual position. The casual hourly rate is $47.36 per hour, plus super.

Induction and training

Tutor Training Day will be held on Friday 17th February, 2023.  Detailed information will be provided to successful applicants. Attending this training is a condition of appointment for successful applicants.  If you cannot attend, you cannot be appointed.  Issues covered at the Training Day include tutor duties and responsibilities, teaching strategies, School facilities, Occupational Health and Safety, teaching evaluations and administrative matters such as timesheets and pay.  A tutor manual will be provided.  You will also be required to attend a follow-up training session in approximately teaching week five.  You will be paid to attend both training sessions.

 You must have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of this appointment to apply. Visa sponsorship is not available for this appointment.
