About This Opportunity 

Our internationally renowned School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences is seeking a number of Simulated Patients to join our Clinical Education and Practice Unit to support the delivery of practical clinical educational experiences for students in healthcare settings.

Simulated Patients are recruited from the community, and some are trained actors. They represent different parts of society and vary in terms of age, culture, language, ethnicity and life experience. Upon joining the program, Simulated Patients become casual employees of the University and are paid to attend training sessions as well as their simulated patient activities.

Simulated Patients play an integral role in medical education providing a unique ‘patient’ perspective to training. As a Simulated Patient, you will role-play many different scenarios to aid in the teaching of medicine and allied health students. This can be through verbal interactions or involve a physical examination component.

Based at our vibrant St Lucia campus , these are ideal positions for those who have the capacity and flexibility to work on a casual basis on set dates and times (see dates/times listed below). 

Key responsibilities will include: 

  • Provide a consistent level of performance in a role play environment as a simulated patient and adhere to patient script for the purposes of student learning/assessment.

  • Follow specific directions and guidance provided by the Simulated Patient Coordinator to ensure simulated experience is appropriate to the situation.

  • Adhere to the timeframes allocated for the simulated patient session.

  • Attend, when required, training sessions to learn specific skills, e.g. physical examinations, responses, movements etc. to better facilitate the scenario that will be performed.

  • Provide specific feedback when required – for both students and fellow peers.

This role is subject to The University’s Code of Conduct .  

About You  

Our ideal candidates will possess a caring and empathetic nature with the ability to role-play a number of different scenarios as per specific directions and a set script.

You must be reliable and adhere to set timeframes; when required, to attend training sessions to learn specific skills in order to better facilitate the scenario being performed. An ability to deal with issues of a sensitive nature are also critical to the role as well as handling information/learning materials in a confidential manner.

In addition, you will possess:

  • Sound communication skills, with an emphasis on the ability to listen

  • Good verbal communication and comprehension skills

  • Reliable and punctual

  • Willingness to be physically touched for assessment and treatment purposes

  • Ability to be clear and concise with directions and feedback

  • Ability to display a caring/empathetic/relaxed/calm nature

  • Ability to learn and repeat a role play consistently

  • Ability to give and accept feedback and modify role play to improve performance

  • Ability to effectively interact with colleagues, students, and other professionals in an unbiased and respectful manner

  • Ability to ensure that all learning materials are kept confidential and not shared with any other party

  • It is desirable that you are comfortable with the human body including dignified exposure of body segments as required by the case. Privacy and dignity will be maintained at all times.

Availability

It is a requirement of these roles that you be available on certain dates/times in 2022/2023.

Role A (supporting Neurological Physiotherapy students):

  • December 14th from 9am – 1pm (in-person training session; training will include review of patient scripts and video prior to attending)

  • January 3rd, 4th & 5th from 8.30am – 5.00pm

  • January 13th from 1pm – 5pm

  • January 30th, 31st & February 1st from 8.30am – 5.00pm

  • February 3rd from 8am – 12pm

  • February 6th, 7th & 8th from 8.30am – 5.00pm

  • February 10th from 8am – 12pm

  • Week commencing January 2nd (online, self-paced training inductions to be completed)

  • January 9th, 10th, 11th & 12th from 9am – 3pm

  • January 16th, 17th, 18th & 19th from 9am – 3pm

  • January 23rd, 24th, 25th & 26th from 9am – 3pm

  • February 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th from 9am – 3pm

  • February 13th, 14th, 15th & 16th from 9am – 3pm

What We Can Offer 

These are casual positions through to 17 February 2023. The casual hourly rate will be $44.10 plus 10.5% super.
