Normal Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 8:00 am to 4:45 pm
Job Summary: The Case Advocate Senior provides individual and class advocacy services to persons with disabilities to include intake, information and referral, implementation of strategic case plans, case investigation, negotiation, and client representation to protect, promote, and expand the rights of persons with disabilities and provide follow-up services to individuals. In addition, the Case Advocate Senior provides public education, training and outreach as well as mentors Case Advocates in policies, procedures and best practices.
Additional Department Summary: The Alabama Disabilities Advocacy Program, known as ADAP, is a federally mandated, statewide protection and advocacy program. It has served to protect, promote, and expand the rights of people with disabilities by providing legally based advocacy services since its inception in 1976.
Required Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and two (2) years of experience as a lawyer, educator, paralegal, advocate or in community outreach; OR Master’s degree and some work experience as a lawyer, educator, paralegal, advocate or in community outreach.
Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: Degree in social work, psychology, special education or other related field to ADAP’s advocacy work.
Travel required, some overnight.
Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 21 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report as determined by the insurance carrier.
Skills and Knowledge: Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to devise advocacy strategies in complex situations. Extensive knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations and procedures regarding the rights of persons with disabilities and the service delivery systems for persons with disabilities, particularly children. Extensive knowledge of disabilities, including mental illness, intellectual disabilities, and physical disabilities. Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; this involves extensive client contact. Sound professional judgment, interpersonal and negotiation skills to build coalitions, develop agreements, and promote productive relationships with adverse parties. Excellent organization skills to handle an advocacy caseload and technical assistance responsibilities. Ability to mentor less experienced staff and to supervise students. Computer skills to include word processing, research and organization of tasks.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree and at least four (4) years of related work experience or three (3) years advocacy work; OR a Bachelor’s degree and at least six (6) years of related work experience or five (5) years advocacy work.
