The Parent Outreach Program provides an in-home teaching program to parents of children with a developmental disability. All staff, being parents of children who are neurodiverse, have an intimate knowledge of the day to day issues faced by other parents in raising their child who are neurodiverse. The goals of the program are: to teach parent how to teach their children at home, to coordinate efforts with classroom teachers and to help parents obtain other services available within their community.

What You Will Do

  • Provide support and training to parents of neurodiverse children in their own homes, or virtually, on a weekly or biweekly basis through the development of Tasks in collaboration with the family and child.

  • Be able to participate in service coordination group meetings and chairing case conferences as required.

  • Help parents to develop skills in assessing their child’s abilities, setting specific behavioral objectives, breaking down behaviors into teachable steps, and rewarding positive behavior.

  • Use current teaching methodology and behavior management practices.

  • Provide parents with accurate information on the availability and appropriateness of community resources and funding support available for themselves and their children. Provide support and advocacy to families who are navigating the Developmental Services sector.

  • Visit with classroom teachers on an as needed basis, either in person or virtually, to discuss home teaching goals and strategies to better support the child and their caregiver.

  • Set up and maintain an efficient work schedule for conducting home and school visits, record keeping and data submission.

  • Attend case conferences, school board IPRCs as necessary where support is beneficial to both the child and the parent.

  • Network with other relevant agencies, community groups and or coalitions regarding issues and needs of families.

  • Attend monthly POP training sessions and other workshops as required.

  • Ensure the anti-racism objectives and community development principles of the organization are achieved within the program.

What You Bring to the Team

  • Must be a parent of a child with a developmental disability living with them at home.

  • Excellent computer skills (Windows, MS Office including Teams) and comfortable with technology (due to COVID-19, many of the visits are virtual).

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to function under minimal supervision.

    What Will Set You Apart

  • Thorough knowledge of community resources. Lived experience navigating the developmental sector and accessing resources in the community is preferred.
