Position Summary:

Reporting to the Assistant Dean, Administration and Strategy, the Manager of the Career Development Office (CDO) provides leadership to the CDO team, and is responsible for developing, administering, planning and implementing a current, high-quality range of services, information resources, programs and skills development training tailored to the needs of undergraduate and graduate law students and recent graduates of the Faculty of Law.

Key functions:

  • Develop the strategic plan for the Career Development Office (CDO), including an effective strategy for the design, development and delivery of programs, services and resources to inform and prepare law students for short and long-term career opportunities.
  • Prepare annual budget, find and secure short- and long-term sources of funding, and allocate funds to relevant programs, activities and professional conferences.
  • Work with and supervise the Career Advisor, Associate and Administrative Coordinator to ensure that the CDO delivers a high level of services to students.
  • In collaboration with the Career Advisor, plan, supervise and execute the design and delivery of information sessions, workshops and panel discussions.
  • Organize career fairs and on-campus interview processes.
  • Share responsibility with the Career Advisor to meet and correspond with students to discuss career options and goals, including clerkships.
  • Oversee the development and update content of careers publications.
  • Participate in the creation of the content for the CDO’s weekly newsletter and social media.
  • Develop outreach opportunities for law students to seek and find employment with law firms, governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations, in-house legal departments and in other areas of legal work within and beyond organized recruitment processes across Canada and internationally.
  • Consolidate and grow alumni network to support initiatives such as the alumni mentorship program and the development of shadowing and internship opportunities for students.
  • Serve as the primary representative of the CDO at various events and meetings across Canada and US.
  • Liaise with University Advancement to explore, develop and enhance opportunities for alumni mentorship, placements and internships, domestically and internationally, programming for students, and funding of CDO activities and operations.
  • Responsible for the development of a range of reports about placement statistics, CDO activities, and student engagement, including the CDO’s annual report to the Faculty Council.

Education & Experience

Education:  Undergraduate degree

Experience: Three (3) years’ related experience

Other Qualifying Skills and/or abilities

Legal and career development experience preferred. Knowledge of organized recruitment processes across Canada.  Experience in event planning and conducting and organizing workshops and career fairs.  Demonstrated time management skills.  Knowledge of changing employment situation for law graduate and trends in the job market. Presentation, public relations, marketing, public speaking and interviewing skills.  Demonstrated ability to manage finances and raise funds for self-financing unit.  Ability to interact at all levels with tact and diplomacy.  English and French, spoken and written

Annual Salary:

(MPEX Grade 05) $65,500.00 – $81,870.00 – $98,240.00
