The UCSD Department of OB/GYN and Reproductive Sciences is composed of 65 faculty, 15 clinical fellows, 26 residents, and over 200 department staff members. The department is composed of 7 divisions: Obstetrics and Gynecology, Maternal-Fetal Medicine, Gynecologic Oncology, Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, Hospitalist, Complex Family Planning and Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. The department is ranked 3rd nationally in research funding compared to other OB-GYN Programs. This includes funding from the National Institutes of Health, NSF, CIRM, CDPH and other private institutions.

Staff Research Associate position to lead NIH funded research on cellular signaling within the ovarian tumor microenvironment impacting chemotherapy resistance and signals controlling leukocyte recruitment and activation using mouse tumor models and human tumor tissue. This is an independent position to design, plan, and analyze changes in cellular signaling and cell type specific mRNA expression in response to changes in focal adhesion kinase (FAK) activity upon genetic or small molecule inhibition of FAK. Research Associate will make and record detailed experimental observations, analyze project-related data and findings, and interpret results in an independent manner. Research Associate will independently develop research plans and contribute innovative ideas for accomplishing project objectives using a combination of flow cytometry, single cell sequencing, and other molecular experimental analyses. Research Associate will prepare experimental results and methods for use in written scientific publications, grant proposals, and oral presentations utilizing various computer software applications.

• Strong theoretical knowledge of molecular biology, cell biology, and tumor immunology research fields.

• Experience in tumor biology, tumor immunology, multi-color flow cytometry, and a background in mathematics or bioinformatic analyses.

• Enthusiasm for learning and a genuine interest in scientific research. Willingness and ability to learn new skills, research methods, and scientific principles.

• Advanced knowledge and experience in the design, construction, production, purification and use of adenoviral, retroviral, lentiviral transfer vectors.

• Skill to determine research activities independently and develop innovative solutions to problems. Skill to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner using computer resources as needed. Experience coordinating studies with other labs or Core facilities.

• Strong communication skills (both verbal and written) needed to interact professionally and effectively with a variety of personnel in the work environment, as well as to effectively and accurately document research procedures. Functions as a team resource able to perform a variety of laboratory-based tasks.

• Strong experience of biosafety techniques and practices. Experience working with chemical hazards and recognizing safety problems.

• Advanced knowledge and experience working with and handling small animals including mice. Strong experience with small animal husbandry and excellent organizational skills to manage all lab animal work.

• Strong experience and skill in accurate record keeping and the ability to organize, analyze, and calculate data. Analyze and summarize the research data for publications and grant proposals.

• Strong experience with review of scientific articles and ability to make innovative contributions to develop new research techniques and improve current protocols for the research projects.

• Master’s degree.

• Co-authorship on research publications.

• Employment is subject to a criminal background check.
