Position Scope/Summary

The Cancer Registrar is responsible for data abstraction, data management and data analysis in the Cancer Registry in compliance with the American College of Surgeon’s, Commission on Cancer accreditation program and the mandated reporting requirements of the Ohio Cancer Incidence and Surveillance System (OCISS). Responsible for data retrieval, data comprehension and data integration in the full spectrum of all disease sites of cancer (Diagnosis; Clinical and Pathological Staging; SEER Summary Staging and First Course Treatment Coding and classification). Technical qualifications including knowledge of the disease process, diagnostic methods and procedures, composition of the health record, data interpretation, and statistical and analytical skills. Skilled in the use of the following standardized coding and classification sets: International Classification of Diseases for Oncology (ICD-O), Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Multiple Primary and Histology rule set, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) Hematopoietic and Lymphoid Neoplasm Coding Manual and Database, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Program (SEER) RX – Interactive Drug Database, American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM direct staging of all cancer sites, Standards for Oncology Registry Entry (STORE).

Minimum Education Required


Associate or Bachelor’s Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
A bachelor’s degree in a health information management, RHIA preferred. 

Required Qualifications

Associate or Bachelor’s degree. CTR eligible within 1 year and/or equivalent combination of education and experience is required. CTR preferred.  Experience in oncology and other related oncology data management desired.  Familiarity of medical records content, chart review and abstraction and an understanding of medical and oncology terminology is required.  Knowledge of medical practices related to cancer treatment / clinical trials and data management experience in an oncology setting required.  Ability to communicate effectively with physicians, oncology nurses, patients as well as medical records / tumor registry personnel.
