CALS ACADEMIC ADVISING MANAGER

The College of Agricultural and Life Sciences (CALS) Office of Academic Affairs serves as the academic dean’s office for all undergraduate students in the college, and also supports graduate and professional students. The office administers the college honors program, first year programing, CALS career services, prospective student recruitment, underrepresented student recruitment and retention, college scholarships, undecided and exploratory advising services, curriculum and advising oversight, CALS study abroad, and other academic and student affairs support. The office is a team-based environment and works in close collaboration with academic and administrative departments across the university as well as with other CALS administrative units.
This is one of two academic advising managers in the Office of Academic Affairs.
While a resource to any CALS Student, this position serves as a primary point of contact for undeclared students as well as those who are exploring new academic interests and promotes appropriate and responsible choices on academic matters, such as course selection and degree requirements.
In their advising capacity they maintain appropriate confidentiality, update student advising records, and contribute to the development of academic advising related programming. Additionally, they work to ensure students receive accurate, timely, and holistic advising services in support of promoting student success, retention, and program completion.
The academic advising managers will also each maintain distinct project portfolios which may include a combination of the following: organizing and facilitating the Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program, supporting co-curricular involvement through advising support of CALS affiliated student organizations, managing CALS events related to fall semester welcome programs and spring semester commencement programming, curating the weekly student newsletter and expanding student communications, connecting with related academic and career advising offices across campus, etc. These positions also support academic advising across the college, in providing leadership for the advising community and serving as backup for academic program advising as needed during transitions.
Position responsibilities require excellent administrative, organizational, and interpersonal skills. This person will be expected to use independent judgment in assessing the urgency of problems and questions from students and the public and determine which issues need to be referred to the appropriate Dean and/or other staff. Position requires the ability to multitask, exercise initiative and action in a multi-functional office setting.

• 10% Receives, processes, and responds to academic inquiries according to established policies and procedures
• 15% Serves as a main point of contact for students and provides information about educational options and academic requirements; assists with identifying and assessing interests, skills, and values to match appropriate field of study/career options, and refers students to appropriate institutional resources
• 10% Develops and implements academic advising events such as workshops, panel discussions, and guest speakers
• 5% Maintains confidentiality and accurate student records and processes and responds to academic inquiries according to established institutional and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) policies
• 10% Supervises unit staff and/or plans, organizes, allocates resources, assesses performance, and leads the operational activities of a function within the advising or academic services portfolio, such as program management and/or curriculum management
• 10% Maintains expertise with advised curriculum and may assist in developing and recommending exceptions for policy and curriculum
• 10% Proactively engages students as needed
• 10% Participates in the campus-wide advising community providing input to leadership regarding the development of advising, recruitment, and co/curricular programs offered by the school/college
• 10% Participates in services provided by CALS Office of Academic Affairs, such as serving in rotation of Dean on Call, office committees, student newsletters, etc.
• 10% Facilitates Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR) program by CALS by providing leadership for structure, programming, and delivery of content.

Preferred
Bachelor’s Degree

Required:
-At least 1 year of previous work experience in academic advising or student services (inclusive of internships and practicum hours)
-A collegial style with the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of constituencies including students, faculty, and staff
-Multicultural awareness and competence; ability to work in a diverse environment and serve students from a wide variety of backgrounds
-Strong organizational and time-management skills including the ability to problem-solve, multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines while paying attention to accuracy and details
-Ability to design and deliver workshops, programs, and events, in-person and virtually
-Ability to gain a broad knowledge of CALS programs and policies as well as University policies and procedures
Preferred:
-Master’s Degree in student affairs or CALS content area
-Demonstrated interest and understanding of student development
-Experience advising college students on academic and co-curricular matters

Full Time: 100%
This position will require some work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location.
Normal hours worked are Monday through Friday, 7:45am – 4:30pm.

Ongoing/Renewable

Minimum $51,000 ANNUAL (12 months)
