Business Analyst

A rare opportunity has arisen for a talented Business Analyst/Developer to work in the Digital Services directorate. As part of the Corporate Systems division the postholder will join the Business Systems team who support and enhance our line of business systems. The successful candidate will have an undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area and will have significant experience as an analyst/developer within a busy digital services environment and ideally have experience of bringing together both technical and business experts. You’ll be a problem solver by nature with a broad set of skills gained from implementing real-world software solutions. You will have a broad set of skills covering both communications, project management as well as having a thorough technical understanding of business systems.

This role will be located on campus at Bangor. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Having secured a multi-million-pound investment in corporate systems with current projects implementing a new HR and Curriculum Management systems this is an exciting time to join a dynamic team of professionals.

Overview

Digital Services is responsible for providing, developing and maintaining IT facilities and services across the University, supporting staff and students to use those facilities and services.

Digital Services has a good reputation within the University, providing reliable and resilient infrastructure, services, applications and facilities. We pride ourselves on being helpful, friendly, and responsive to user needs.

Digital Services comprises circa 100 staff with its IT responsibilities set in three main areas: Corporate Systems, Infrastructure and Client Services.

The post of Business Analyst/Developer is located within the Digital Transformations team who are responsible for co-ordinating large digital projects across the University as part of the wider Corporate Systems group which reports to the “Head of Corporate Systems”. The role will work closely with the Business Systems team who deliver second line support to our corporate systems, the DevOps team who write in-house applications, the 1st line support team who support all our business systems and various stakeholders across the university. The post holder will report to the Digital Transformations Team Leader in IT Services’ Corporate Systems Division.


Purpose of the Job

The post holder will take a leading role in the analysis of business processes to scope and develop new digital solutions. The successful candidate will work closely with the colleagues across Digital Services and various stakeholders across the University. In addition to analysing business requirement the role will allow some scope for solution development.


Main Duties and Responsibilities

• Analyse business processes and business systems to address new challenges and improve existing solutions
• Analyse systems for suitability to address business requirements
• Provide detailed technical requirements for developers to implement digital solutions
• Identify training required to implement a business solution
• Test digital solutions to ensure they meet the identified requirements and ensure that they meet the needs of the university as a whole and not a narrow client base
• Provide data mapping expertise to enable the implementation of a new solution
• Configure software applications to implement business requirements
• Export, transform and load business data

Person Specification

Qualifications/Training
Essential
• Undergraduate degree in a relevant subject area.
• Evidence of excellent IT and numeracy skills including knowledge of MS Office365 applications (including MS Project)
Desirable
• Relevant professional accreditation
• A postgraduate degree in a relevant subject
• Experience of using any formal project management methodologies
• Evidence of career learning development
Experience/Knowledge
Essential
• Experience of analysing business processes
• Experience of documenting business processes using notation such as BPMN
• Experience of working with non-technical end-users to elicit information
• Experience of analysing data to support the selection of the most viable process option
• Knowledge of finance systems (e.g. general, purchase and sales ledgers)
• Experience of working in the Higher Education Sector
• Extensive experience analysing data within SQL
Skills/Abilities
Essential
• Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of the team, taking a lead role where appropriate
• Ability to give support/advice in a professional way to all levels of staff within Digital Services, the wider university and external organisations
• Evidence of the ability to understand and convey information which requires careful explanation, both written and oral
• Evidence of the ability to organise, prioritise and plan time and resources, including personal time management, working to deadlines and planning work for others
• Relevant experience of working with a broad range of stakeholders and suppliers to agree work packages and deliver best solutions
• Evidence of ability to solve problems using initiative and creativity, and of ability to identify, develop and select options independently.
Desirable
• Knowledge of supporting any of the following systems: Unit 4 Business World, Planon, Ellucian Banner and/or Wortktribe • The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable for this role. If applicants are not able to speak / write in Welsh at present, there are many opportunities to learn if the successful candidate wishes to do so.
