Job Description

The Business Administrator plays a critical role in the day-to-day payroll operations for Ryan Hospital and assists with various other financial activities of Ryan Hospital on an on-going basis. The primary responsibilities of the role include payroll processing, payroll analysis/reporting for the Ryan Hospital and additional operating units where necessary. This position has administrative responsibilities of on-boarding and off-boarding staff, maintaining position control rosters, processing payroll adjustments, providing guidance/assistance to managers for payroll processes, and addressing and/or triaging employee issues related to payroll. In addition to payroll responsibilities, the role will assist with reporting efforts and provide additional support for other VHUP departments. An individual in this role possesses a strong attention to detail and displays a willing initiative to proactively identify and address potential issues within their purview to ensure proper financial stewardship of Ryan Hospital resources. Additionally, an individual in this position will be flexible to accommodate various ad hoc duties as they are assigned, completing them accurately and in a timely manner.

Job Responsibilities

  • Prepares, analyzes, and maintains annual budgets and grants for the department. Monitors budgets/grants and reallocates funds as necessary.
  • Administers and coordinates the daily financial and administrative operation of the department to ensure effective office procedures and efficient work flow. Coordinates activities of assigned staff and assists in handling related personnel issues including hiring, promotions, salary administration, etc. for the department.
  • Processes or assists in monitoring the processing of payroll for department in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Reviews, analyzes, summarizes and interprets financial data. Monitors and prepares financial reports on all financial activity for the department.
  • Oversee financial transactions in Workday. Ensures proper documentation/files are prepared and maintained for all transactions including expense reimbursements, purchase orders, petty cash, general journal transfers, etc
  • Assists in the preparation of grant and/or contract proposals
  • Acts as liaison for department with other university offices and represents the department at meetings, on task forces, etc.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as assigned


Bachelor’s degree and 2 to 3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree in accounting, or similar discipline is highly preferred. Two-three years’ experience in payroll is highly desirable. Experience in Workday and additional certifications in payroll management is highly desirable.
