Job Summary:

The School of Education is a unique school made up of ten diverse academic departments, three major research units, and many outreach and support units, all known for their dedication to high-quality outcomes and their desire to positively impact our world. The Budget and Finance Director will manage the budget and financial management activities for the School of Education. Reporting to the School of Education’s Chief Financial Officer, this position will work collaboratively with School leadership, department and unit leadership, and budget and finance staff in the areas of budget development and management, accounting, purchasing, expense reimbursements, gift fund management, and financial analysis and forecasting.
The Budget and Finance Director serves as the manager of budget and financial activities on behalf of the School of Education. Working closely with the CFO, this position provides financial analysis, forecasting, and financial planning support to advance the mission of the School. Responsibilities include leading the Budget and Finance team in the Business Office, leading the development of the School’s annual budget, providing financial analysis and forecasting to assist in financial management and strategy development, leading financial management activities (purchasing, accounting, reimbursements) and managing a large portfolio of gift funds. The Budget and Finance Director should be committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility with regard to budget and financial management activities.
Successful candidates will need to be able to build and sustain relationships with multiple stakeholders at all levels of the organization. They will need to actively listen to, and communicate with, senior leadership in the School of Education. The successful candidate will implement initiatives through coalition-building, often exercising influence without direct authority. The ideal candidate will be one who can understand the School’s strategic directions related to finance and translate them into administrative support solutions while navigating the unique cultures within a higher education environment. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest and desire in financial data and analysis and how to represent and communicate financial data to broad audiences. The candidate will also be proactive, with a focus on communication, training, and continuous improvement in the areas of budget and financial management.

Responsibilities: Plans, develops, and implements financial strategic goals, priorities, policies, and procedures across multiple finance functional areas to ensure efficient financial resource deployment. Develops budgets, manages automated accounting systems, and provides consultation to administrative units to encourage the use of best practices for compliant, efficient reporting.

  • 25% Directs strategic planning initiatives and establishes objectives for multiple finance functional areas to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, and staffing resources and alignment with the strategic plan
  • 5% Determines personnel needs and the personnel resource allocation plan
  • 10% Oversees, reviews, develops, recommends, and implements policies and procedures for internal and external financial reporting, budgeting and financial operations
  • 10% Participates in the development, maintenance, and monitoring of automated financial information systems and budgets, and disseminates updates and results to leadership when appropriate
  • 20% Serves as a divisional representative and subject matter expert to institutional leadership and internal and external stakeholders providing financial direction and information, fostering collaborative relationships across multiple functional areas, and representing the interests of the division
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 20% Leads the development of the School?s annual budget; working collaboratively with School leadership, department and unit leadership, and institutional budget contacts.

Bachelor’s Degree

Qualifications:

– Minimum 5 years in budgeting, financial planning, and analysis
– Experience in budgeting, financial planning and analysis at UW-Madison or another UW System institution preferred.

Full Time: 100%
This position has the ability to work in a hybrid environment, partially onsite and partially remote. Remote work schedule is to be discussed at the time of hire.

Salary:

Minimum $112,200 ANNUAL (12 months)
