Job Summary
To provide leadership in the area of designing statistical methodologies, statistical modeling, and evaluation for the UBC Reproductive Infectious Disease (RID) Program at the Women’s Health Research Institute, BC Women’s Hospital + Health Centre.
Major responsibilities include:
1) designing statistical methodologies for new and ongoing research projects – formulating research questions and hypotheses, selecting/devising study designs, designing study samples and developing study procedures
2) selecting/designing appropriate analytic and evaluation procedures, especially statistical methods, including multi-level modeling
3) contributing to the education and training of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, providing direction in relation to data analysis of projects
4) writing of research proposals, reports and manuscripts for publication and presentation of findings at conferences and meetings.
Organizational Status
This position reports to the program lead, Dr. Deborah Money. The biostatistician will work with a team of health researchers including clinicians, scientists, trainees, research staff and other health care researchers on joint research projects.
Work Performed
Designing statistical methodologies for new and ongoing research projects
Formulating research questions and hypotheses, selecting/devising study designs, designing study samples and developing study procedures
Selecting and/or designing appropriate analytic and evaluation procedures, especially statistical methods, including multi-level modeling
Designing and developing databases for the input of data from various sources, including surveys, clinical data forms and administrative data; responsible for the security and integrity of databases
Data quality evaluation and performing statistical modelling
Documentation of methodological procedures
Research data analysis
Preparation of dissemination materials including, writing manuscripts and grant proposals, etc.
Providing technical support to staff and assistance with the educational needs of graduate students
Working collaboratively with others to support meeting project objectives by actively participating at team meetings, establishing effective communications with project staff and co-investigators, ensuring timely notification of problems or issues to the PI
Carrying out any other related duties as required in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of a position in this classification
The candidate will have a hybrid work arrangement between the Women’s Health Research Institute, BC Women’s Hospital and from home. Hours are 0.5 FTE /half time (17.5hr/week).
Consequence of Error/Judgement
The position requires excellent judgment to identify and carry out sound analytical techniques for research projects. Errors could result in damage to the reputation of the Principal Investigator and University of BC.
Supervision Received
The incumbent will require minimal supervision and will exercise independent judgment regarding scheduling and timely completion of tasks.
Supervision Given
It is expected that this position will assist with the education and training of graduate students and post-doctoral fellows, providing direction in relation to data analysis of projects.
Minimum Qualifications
Post-graduate degree in Statistics. Minimum of three years of related experience in research analysis, or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
PhD in numerical modeling preferred
Related experience in health care research and evaluation preferred
Experience in working with linked health care data and expertise in advanced statistical techniques including multi-level modeling
Computer experience including statistical, spreadsheet, bibliographic and geographical mapping (R, SPSS/SAS, REDCap, Excel, EndNote)
Previous teaching experience would be an asset
Excellent oral and written communication, analytical, problem-solving, organizational and decision-making skills
Ability to exercise judgment, tact and with discretion
Be able to work both independently and within a team environment and have the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines
