Biochemist/Analytical Chemist for the Metabolomics Unit, FIMM Technology Centre

The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is an international research institute focusing on human genomics and personalised medicine at the University of Helsinki. In the beginning of 2017 FIMM joined the University of Helsinki’s new life science research centre, Helsinki Institute of Life Science HiLIFE, as an operational unit. FIMM integrates molecular medicine research, technology centre and biobanking infrastructures under one roof, promoting translational research in grand challenge projects, specifically, the impact of genome information from the Finnish population in personalised health and medicine, individualised cancer medicine, and digital molecular medicine. FIMM is part of the Nordic EMBL Partnership for Molecular Medicine, composed of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and the centres for molecular medicine in Norway, Sweden and Denmark, and the EU-LIFE Community.

Biochemist/Analytical Chemist (Laboratory coordinator) for the Metabolomics Unit, FIMM Technology Centre 

Description: 
The FIMM Technology Centre has state-of-the-art infrastructures for genomics, medical bioinformatics, metabolomics, high-throughput screening, biobanking, biomarker discovery and other translational research platforms. FIMM Metabolomics Unit was launched in 2011. The unit has cutting edge equipment including UPLC systems coupled to ORBITRAP-MS, QQQ mass spectrometer (MS), QToF-MS, and QTRAP-MS (5500 and 6500+) and a robot, Hamilton’s Star liquid handling system. The unit offers services for high-throughput targeted and quantitative metabolomics and lipidomics, and metabolic flux analyses for biomedical applications. 

Responsibilities 
• The responsibilities of the position will primarily include the analysis of methods/workflows in metabolomics.
• Main tasks involve analysing the customer samples, documentation, and maintenance of the instruments and the lab and coordination of iLAB core facility service portal and invoicing.
• The candidate will work with OMICS data-analysis pipelines
• The applicant will also be involved in the daily operations of the core facility including project discussions and experimental planning.
• The applicant has possibility to join research project of the core.

Qualification and experience: 
• The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree in Analytical chemistry or Chemistry or Biochemistry or a related field with proven expertise (1-3 years of experience).
• Solid knowledge and working experience in different sample preparation (SPE, LL etc), ultra pressure liquid chromatographic (HILIC, Reverse and normal phase etc), mass spectrometry (QQQ, Q-TOF, QTRAP, ORBITRAP etc) systems, and prior experience in quantitative/qualitative metabolomics is required.
• Experience in global metabolomics analyses, and familiarity in handling LC systems and liquid handling system for metabolite extraction are considered advantageous.
• The ability to effectively interact with the group members in a team-oriented manner is a must.
• A service-minded and customer-friendly attitude is a must.
• The successful candidate is expected to be highly self-motivated and responsible with excellent scientific, problem solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
• In addition, the candidate should be fluent in English and fluent Finnish is considered advantageous
• In addition, the candidate should have good interpersonal and communication skills, and be able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Salary & contract: 
The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience based on the University salary system. A fixed term contract will be offered until 31.12.2024 (long term extension is possible) with a trial period of 4 months. The position is a full time position starting on 1.12. or upon mutual agreement .
