Description
In the Montana Master Naturalist Program participants will build the skills to interpret Montana’s flora, fauna, and landscape, and gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the natural world, therefore becoming better stewards of it. This program is an excellent certification for those looking to pursue a career in environmental education, interpretive guiding, or those just looking to gain field experience in the backcountry. Master Naturalist can also be taken for college credit through the University of Montana, Course ENST 391.

In the backcountry course, students will spend four days and three nights camping and studying subalpine species such as whitebark pine, Clark’s nutcracker, pika, and hoary marmots, while exploring Western Montana’s Swan Mountains. Students will also gain experience camping in grizzly bear country and practicing leave-no-place principles.

* Food and lodging included. Backcountry tents, sleeping bags, sleeping pads all included if needed. All group gear (water filters, cookware, stove, etc) provided. Participants must be able to hike 7 miles with a 30-40lb pack.
