Automotive Technician I – 517448

Pay Grade/Pay Range:  $22.00/hr

Normal Work Schedule: Monday – Friday 7:00am to 4:00pm

Job Summary: The Automotive Technician I is the first step in the Automotive Technician Job Family. Under moderate supervision, the Automotive Technician I applies knowledge to the repair and maintenance on automobiles, trucks, and tractors, golf carts, mules, trailers, and other equipment in accordance with standard trade practices, vehicle cleanup and other service station type duties such as changing batteries, hoses and lines, repairing flat tires, installing wiper blades, assisting customers with fueling and other duties as required.

Additional Department Summary: The University of Alabama has in excess of 1000 units to be serviced. Approximately 250 units need pm service every month. This position repairs and maintains vehicles with minimal supervision, while reporting and advising to one or more of the following: Service Writer, Shop Supervisor, Service Manager, Assistant Director, and/or Director in decisions relating to mechanical repairs and in matters concerning safe vehicle operation.

Required Minimum Qualifications: High School diploma or GED and a minimum of one (1) year of recent, referenced experience repairing vehicles in an automotive shop setting and successful completion at an Automotive Tech Trade Center or equivalent facility. Must have the basics to determine the cause and extent of component or system failure through test drives, pressure and temperature checks, visual inspection, use of diagnostic equipment, reference by technical service manuals, schematics, diagnose problem/malfunction and identify part(s) and repair procedures that are required and/or needed. Additional Required Department Minimum Qualifications: A valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class B, or ability to obtain CDL within six (6) months of the date of hire required.

Must have valid U.S. driver’s license. Must be at least 19 years of age at time of hire and have an acceptable Motor Vehicle Report that is in compliance with University policies. Applicants under the age of 21 will have some driving restrictions.

Final candidates who are not current University of Alabama employees must submit to and successfully pass a post-offer drug screen.

Skills and Knowledge: Must have the basic knowledge to determine the cause and extent of a component or system failure through test drives, pressure, and temperature checks, visual inspection, use of diagnostic equipment, reference by technical service manuals, schematics, diagnose problem/malfunction, and identify the part(s) and repair procedures that are required and/or needed.

Knowledge of principles, methods, and tools involved for moving people and/or securing goods/equipment when transporting to avoid any type of damage as well as understanding the cost benefits Transport movable equipment to Automotive Services or designated off-campus vendors for repairs and/or work necessary to restore to service. Picks up equipment at vendors after work is complete and returns to campus.

Ability to lift, handle, maneuver, and use the tools and equipment used in the performance of the duties required.

Preferred Qualifications: One ASE certification.
