Augustana PT Coordinator – Asst/Assoc Teaching Professor

This position is a part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

This position has a term starting on July 1, 2024, and ends on June 30, 2027. Salary will be commensurate with experience in accordance with the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) agreement .

Location – This role is in-person at Augustana Camrose.

Working for the Department of Physical Therapy 

The Department of Physical Therapy in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Alberta is seeking applicants for part-time Assistant/Associate Teaching Professor positions for the Augustana satellite site of the MScPT program.

At both the Edmonton campus and the Calgary satellite site, the University of Alberta MScPT program offers students a wide variety of academic and clinical experiences supported by an extensive network of dedicated academic and clinical educators and preceptors. The MScPT program  is returning to the UofA Augustana Campus in Camrose and re-establishing the Augustana Satellite site commencing in the fall of 2024.

The Master of Science in Physical Therapy (MScPT) Program is the only entry-to-practice degree program in Alberta.  MScPT graduates are professionals with the clinical knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable them to:

  • Integrate theory, research, clinical skills, and client values to identify, develop and implement intervention strategies that result in the best outcome for each client, family, and client population.
  • Practice in a manner inclusive of all whom they serve, are understanding of oppressive and systematic practices that result in the health disparities, and are active contributors to anti-racist and equitable physiotherapy service delivery.
  • Continually improve physical therapy services delivered to the public and contribute to the research and clinical knowledge in physical therapy.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and resilience, assume leadership roles, and work collaboratively to achieve appropriate outcomes for a variety of clients in diverse, complex and changing healthcare environments.

The MScPT Program is a year-round, full-time program and can be completed within 30 months of study. All Canadian entry-level PT programs graduate physiotherapy generalists and are not programs of specialization. National entry-level competencies must be acquired in all practice areas (musculoskeletal, cardiorespiratory, neurology, oncology, pediatrics, etc.) by the end of the program.

Position 

In addition to teaching, Teaching Professors are expected to participate in initiatives related to the scholarship of teaching & learning (SoTL) research, to promote scholarship initiatives, and to engage in service activities within the Department and the broader academic and clinical community. Based in Camrose, Alberta, the positions on offer comprise teaching and teaching-related responsibilities, as well as a teaching-related service component, including (but not limited to) the following:

Duties 

  • Ensure the operational requirements of the MScPT program are met on a day-to-day basis; intervene in a timely and prompt manner in operational and student issues that arise;
    • Teaching assistant and Lab facilitator for assigned MScPT courses;
    • Primary or Co-Instructor and/or Coordinator for assigned MScPT courses;
    • Primary contact and support for Augustana-based faculty and sessional instructors; Student advisor for the Augustana MScPT students (16 students per cohort);
  • Collaborate with faculty and staff across the Edmonton, Calgary and Augustana MScPT program sites, as well as with the Communication Sciences & Disorders and Occupational Therapy programs, to ensure equitable quality learning experiences for all students;
  • Contribute to the development, delivery and evaluation of the MScPT program across all sites; Support Augustana-specific scheduling, communications, community activities and external relationships;
  • Support and/or coordinate clinical education activities in Camrose and Central Alberta, including placement preparation seminars, student and preceptor support during placements.
  • Work with the Academic Coordinator for Clinical Education and other faculty members to cultivate community relationships and new clinical placements;
  • Participate in Department of Physical Therapy and Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine Committees as assigned.
  • Establish clinical opportunities within the Augustana community, e.g. athlete health.

Minimum Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years of physical therapy experience in a variety of practice and/or academic settings, including leadership roles.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in an academic setting;
  • A demonstrated history of, or commitment to, continuous quality improvement/ engagement in professional teaching development activities, ideally related to teaching and learning; Experience in clinical education coordination or student supervision/mentorship;
  • Familiarity and comfort with using distance/remote learning technology;
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, including conflict management skills.
  • Successful candidates should expect to work in a dynamic, team-focused environment and be open to a variety of professional development opportunities. Annual teaching, program delivery, scholarship, and teaching-related service responsibilities are determined in negotiation with the Department Chair, responsive to the person’s strengths and the Department’s requirements.

Additional Information:

Registration with the College of Physiotherapists of Alberta (CPTA) is required by the start date.

Although preference will be given to applicants with a PhD, Clinical Doctorate or post-professional Master’s degree, candidates with an entry to practice MScPT with a strong clinical background and a passion for teaching are encouraged to apply.
