Job Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Assistant Athletic Director for Academic Services, the incumbent will provide intensive academic support to an assigned group of identified student-athletes, some of whom may have diagnosed or undiagnosed disabilities or disorders which impact academic performance. This position supports students one-on-one and in small groups to develop study skills, to promote skill development within the content areas of the student’s courses, and to assess the student’s academic needs to determine the necessity for additional academic support and/or individualized academic plans. The incumbent may also provide additional support in the form of academic advising, monitoring academic performance and class attendance, and monitoring eligibility. Occasional evenings and weekends are required to meet student needs. Additional administrative duties as assigned.

Responsibilities: Provides intensive academic support to assigned individual student athletes or groups of student athletes and assists skill development by teaching study skills and promoting skill development within the content areas of the student’s courses.

  • 55% Works with students one-on-one and in small groups to assist skill development by teaching study skills and promoting skill development within the content areas of the student’s courses
  • 10% Assesses and evaluates the student’s academic needs to determine the necessity for additional academic support
  • 5% May provide additional academic support services in the form of academic advising, monitoring academic performance and class attendance, and monitoring eligibility
  • 10% May coordinate the preparation and implementation of individualized academic plans including mentoring, tutoring, study hall, and skill development
  • 5% May communicate regularly with coaches and administrators and be available to meet with prospective student athletes and their families on recruiting visits as needed
  • 15% Assists students with diagnosed learning disabilities and challenges to improve understanding of academic curriculum

Education:

Required
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field and/or special education teacher certification
Preferred
Master’s Degree in a related field and/or special education teacher certification

Qualifications:

1-3 years of experience serving students with learning challenges and disabilities, and experience working with students in a secondary or college/university setting.
The most qualified candidate will be a student-centered individual who prioritizes strong relationships with students and colleagues, and who possesses: a self-motivated and team-oriented approach, a desire to engage with and serve diverse groups of individuals in various settings, a knowledge of NCAA and Big Ten rules, and the ability to multitask with strong attention to detail and organization.

Conditions of Appointment: This is a 100% Academic Staff appointment. Salary will be assigned within the appropriate range, commensurate with the candidate’s qualifications and experience.
