Position Focus:
Partner with Physicians in Pediatric Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine to provide care to pediatric and adolescent athletes and help develop community outreach programs in local high schools and other youth athlete venues. Partner with physician in clinic with taking a thorough injury or condition history and medical history, performing a physical examination of the patient, conducting a pain level assessment, reviewing of medications and allergies, teaching patients home exercises, giving pre-operative instructions, assisting with the removal of sutures after surgery, and assessing quality of life. The Athletic Trainer will perform appropriate physical examinations including range of motion, strength, sensation, palpation, functional, ligamentous, and other special testing as needed. Special testing may include gait and motion assessment as well as functional tasks. The Athletic Trainer will evaluate patients with concussions including the use of standardized symptom, memory, vision, and balance clinical assessment tools. This role will help review, and interpret diagnostic tests under physician direction including radiographs, MRIs, EMGs, CT Scans, ultrasounds, and motion analysis. The ATC may also pend orders for physician signature. The position will be responsible for documenting each patient’s visit as required in EPIC including patient history, exam details, test results, impressions, treatment plans, and patient instructions. This role may provide proper post-operative wound care and education, removal of sutures and dressing changes to post-surgical patients as directed by the attending physician. This position will answer patient questions regarding treatment plans, surgery, rehabilitation and any future care. This role will help plan professional development, attend educational in-services, participate in professional activities, and maintain a knowledge of current trends and practices. This position will assist the physician in the development or revision of policies and procedures pertaining to sports medicine patients and practices and will implement clinical initiatives with regard to patient safety and compliance. This person will also partner with the Senior Administrative Assistant/Clinical Scheduler to assure a timely response to patient phone calls. This position may require evening (2 – 4 days per week) and weekend work. The ATC will help develop their role in conjunction with the pediatric sports medicine team. If outreach is done, it may consist of providing on-site care for high school or club athletics and sports events. This position will work independently as assigned or, in collaboration with staff athletic trainers, attending physicians, and other staff in delivering sports medicine services for patients and athletes. This position will establish or continue to facilitate a working relationship with the assigned school/team and possibly provide on-site sports medicine care, sport events coverage, athlete health and safety education, and other administrative duties. The ATC will work with young patients and should be interested in and able to communicate well with young athletes and their families.
Essential Duties
1. Treats and rehabilitates athletes to return them to full activity levels. 2. Conducts pre-season screening and conditioning to prevent injuries during competitions 3. Administers first aid and emergency techniques; applies tape, bandages, braces and padding to injuries. 4. Recommends new or modified care treatment; documents treatments, referrals and injury reports. 5. Determines methods for educating both athletes and coaching staff on proper training techniques and modalities. 6. In conjunction with the team physician, determines when an athlete has completed a rehabilitation program and can resume an appropriate level of activity. 7. Assists team physician during clinical hours. 7. Assists team physician during clinical hours. 8. Travels with and/or oversees assigned varsity sports teams. 9. May perform other duties as assigned.
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Physical Therapy or Allied Health Sciences required and two years of experience as an Athletic Trainer at the collegiate level or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Knowledge of NCAA and Ivy League regulations.
Required Skill/Ability 1:
Ability to perform the outlined tasks with minimal or no supervision in a clinical setting as they will have direct patient contact for the evaluation and treatment of medical and MSK pathology with the scope and practice of athletic training clinical competencies as defined by the NATA Board of Cert. and the State of CT Athletic Training Practice Act.
Required Skill/Ability 2:
Ability to maintain confidentiality according to HIPAA as this role will have access/knowledge of confidential medical info regarding medical history and access to information regarding the evaluation/treatment of patients. Ability to be creative, resourceful, and innovative in problem solving as problems encountered are of a moderate level of complexity.
Required Skill/Ability 3:
Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as the understanding and use of relevant medical terminology and, the ability to coordinate patient and/or athlete care services with other health care providers.
Required Skill/Ability 4:
Proven ability to perform appropriate physical examination on patients seen including; range of motion testing, strength testing, sensation testing, palpation, functional testing, ligamentous testing, and special tests as needed and, the ability to review (under the direction of a physician) radiographs, MRIs, EMG studies, CT scans and, diagnostic ultrasounds.
Required Skill/Ability 5:
Ability to educate patients based on individual needs including but not limited to exercise instruction and demonstration and answering patient questions regarding the treatment plan, surgery, rehabilitation and future care.
Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:
Nationally certified athletic trainer (ATC), Connecticut state licensure, and a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Athletic Training (required for CT DPH regulation. CPR/AED (BLS) certification required. Experience working with pediatric and/or adolescent patients/athletes. Pediatric residency ideal.
