Position Summary
The Assistant Director of Communications and Alumni Relations at the College of Nursing serves as a collaborative strategist and leader by developing and implementing communication plans focused on alumni, donors, philanthropy, and overall college communication. The position will conceptualize and execute a cohesive and comprehensive communication, stewardship and donor recognition program. The person in this position will also manage events and gatherings to further engage the College of Nursing community-of-supporters. The core objectives for this position are to communicate and engage alumni and donors to create an environment of high-level stewardship for University Advancement Gift Officers, and to act as liaison between the College of Nursing Office of Marketing & Communications and Office of Development & Alumni Relations to ensure streamlined communication and outreach from the college. This position requires a commitment to the MSU and CON philosophy, policies, procedures, practices and professional behaviors relative to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).
Position responsibilities include but are not limited to:
This position will work a standard schedule of Monday through Friday 8 am-5 pm with occasional evenings or weekends.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree in Journalism, Telecommunications, or Public Relations; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in public and media relations, composing, editing and publication production, news, broadcasting, and print media, and/or marketing, advertising, and creative services; demonstrated skills with graphic design; word processing; desktop publishing; web design; presentation; spreadsheet and/or database software; public presentation; and radio presentation; knowledge of paid, earned and owned social media; marketing, and external messaging as pertaining to development; excellent writing skills in development communications; knowledge of principles and techniques relevant to major gift fundraising; previous experience managing, analyzing, and reporting data; experience implementing programming and strategic initiatives in an organization; knowledge of national DEI initiatives through experience and/or training; good decision-making skills, tactful, strong listening skills, willingness to search out answers, ability to recognize when others need to be involved in activities or decisions; proven skills and ability in managing multi-phase projects from inception to completion, including building consensus among team members and balancing multiple concurrent priorities.
Desired Qualifications
Minimum of two years of experience in communications including interviewing; four years related, and progressively more responsible or expansive, work experience in professional fundraising, alumni/donor relations, public relations, marketing, or related field; collaborative team-oriented style; excellent interpersonal and customer relations skills; ability to work with wide variety of personality styles; understanding of database segmentation, and prospect identification; understanding the importance of building lifelong relationships between the college and its alumni and friends; self-starter, with demonstrated ability to take initiative.
