| Department Summary | The Department of Biological Sciences, one of four departments in the College of Science, has over 40 faculty, 175 graduate and 3,000 undergraduate students. Our faculty is a community of scholars dedicated to research and teaching in Ecology, Environmental Science, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Physiology, Neuroscience, Plant Biology, and Organismal- environment interactions. We offer Bachelor’s degrees in Biology, Biochemistry, Ecology, Medical Laboratory Science, and Forensic Science, and Masters and PhDs in Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and Environmental Science. We measure our success by the success of our students and the quality of our intellectual contributions to society. UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. | Position Summary | The Department of Biological Sciences at the University of North Texas (UNT) invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level in Microbiology and Microbial Genomics. Applicants with research interests in microbial processes that link genes to population, community, and ecosystem-level interactions are also encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will use modern approaches in microbial systems and have the skills to work independently as well as in collaborative groups. The successful candidate will be expected to obtain funding to support a vibrant research program in their discipline and engage in mentoring undergraduate and graduate research, and education by teaching courses in their area of expertise, which will include microbiology, microbial genomics, and allied subjects. The faculty member is also expected to participate in relevant regional, national, and international research communities within their disciplines. The successful candidate will interact with diverse faculty, staff, and students within and between departments at UNT, including members from the Advanced Environmental Research Institute (AERI: http://aeri.unt.edu) and the BioDiscovery Institute (BDI: http://bdi.unt.edu), contributing to a strong tradition of interdisciplinary and collaborative research at UNT. The faculty member should have an interest and participate in our growing undergraduate (https://biology.unt.edu/undergraduate-programs) and graduate (http://biology.unt.edu/graduate-programs) degree programs and is expected to help foster student growth along with other faculty members through instruction and research. |
| Minimum Qualifications | The successful candidate will have a doctoral degree in Biological Sciences or a related field with postdoctoral experience. |
| Preferred Qualifications | Preference will be given to applicants with 1) at least 3-year postdoctoral experience in microbiology, microbial genomics, or allied fields related to microbes interacting with their environment, 2) a proven record or propensity to obtain external funding to support an active research program, 3) a growing record of scholarship and publication in higher-tier journals appropriate to the applicant’s field of study, 4) an academic record demonstrating the potential for excellence in undergraduate and graduate teaching, and 5) experience and/or a vision for promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion within their lab, classroom, and professional community. |
