Position Overview

The Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering (CEAE) at The University of Kansas (KU) is seeking applicants for the position of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor of Practice in the areas of environmental and water resource engineering. The candidate must be eligible to work in the U.S. by time of appointment.

Appointment level will be based on an applicant’s scholarly and teaching record and practical experience. All Professor of the Practice positions, regardless of rank, are non-tenured positions appointed for a three-year limited term period. Due to the percentage of effort focused upon instructional duties, all applicants must possess outstanding teaching skills and teach a minimum of twelve credit hours of regularly scheduled classes per semester.

The Department of Civil, Environmental and Architectural Engineering has a long history of excellence in the field of environmental and water resource engineering. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and teach undergraduate and graduate courses in environmental engineering and water resource engineering. The candidate’s specific area(s) of specialty are meant to enhance and complement ongoing programs and existing expertise in the Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering Department.

The Department of Civil, Environmental & Architectural Engineering (http://ceae.ku.edu/ ) currently has 26 tenured/tenure-track faculty, and three professors of practice, approximately 400 undergraduate students and 150 graduate students, with programs leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

Job Description

80% Teaching – Teach courses totaling 12 credit hours per semester in the Bachelor’s program in Civil Engineering (CE) and Master’s program in Environmental and Water Resource Engineering addressing environmental and water resource engineering analysis and design. Teaching responsibilities include enhancing and improving curriculum and advising students on course selection.

20% Service – Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, serve on graduate committees and other departmental committees, work with student organizations, and collaborate with faculty and staff in enhancing the curriculum, recruiting highly qualified students, and with promotional activities. Perform other duties as assigned by the department chair, such as providing general internal service at KU at the department, school and university levels.

Required Qualifications

  • A Master’s degree in civil engineering, environmental engineering, or a closely related discipline
  • Ability to develop and teach courses in environmental and water resource engineering analysis and design
  • Assistant Professor of the Practice: all of the above and at least 10 years of practical experience in environmental and/or water resource engineering.

    Associate Professor of the Practice: all of the above and at least 15 years of practical experience in environmental and/or water resource engineering.

    Full Professor of the Practice: all of the above and at least 20 years of practical experience in environmental and/or water resource engineering.

    Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in promoting educational programs and recruiting
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer (P.E.)
  • Experience in teaching or training in one or more of the following areas: drinking water treatment, water and wastewater design, fluid mechanics and pipe flow, air quality
  • Ability to communicate ideas in oral and written form as demonstrated by application materials and interview
