JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Information Technology Department, within the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Pennsylvania State University is seeking an Associate Systems Administrator to support the full spectrum of technology and computing needs of students, faculty and staff of the Bellisario College of Communications.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Assisting in the designing, testing and deploying system configurations for labs, faculty, staff and classroom computers and mobile devices
  • Administering and maintaining desktop and server hardware
  • Providing access to other services (including mobile device management, backup, file-sharing, directory, software updates, etc.)
  • Understanding the hardware and software used for College use cases to best support the College in all areas of operations
  • The ability to effectively train, advise and provide technical guidance to “Tier 1” and “Tier 2” support personnel is essential for executing the duties of this position in an efficient manner

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following duties: 

  • Primarily focused on Windows OS – Design polices and configurations for Windows OS that can be deployed via Group Policy and BigFix
  • Under general direction install, configure, customize and maintain Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux client and server hardware
  • Assist in identifying service-related issues, recommend solutions, and escalate as necessary
  • Maintain current and correct documentation
  • Scan computers for security vulnerabilities using available tools
  • Work with Office of Information Security to detect misuse and violations and report to appropriate personnel
  • Install and maintain anti-virus software
  • Remove unneeded services and software
  • Assist in maintaining adequate system logs and backups
  • Communicate with employees and partners before and during security incidents
  • Educate employees on security policies and their responsibilities
  • Apply vendor-supplied fixes necessary to repair security vulnerabilities
  • Assist in the evaluation of potential equipment, components, and software
  • Assist in developing plans, schedules, and requirements for the deployment of systems
  • Assist in developing effective processes and procedures that impact systems
  • Document and understand the local technical environment
  • Serve as the subject matter expert or primary point-of-contact to end-users for escalated incidents
  • Act as backup for team members in case of absence/emergency

 

This position typically requires an Associate’s Degree or higher or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

The Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications currently has 150 full-time part-time faculty in 4 academic departments. The College serves around 3,000 undergraduate students in 5 undergraduate majors and provides graduate programs.
