The Faculty of Health is seeking to appoint an Associate Research Fellow (ARF). This role will initiate and have responsibility for overseeing an externally-funded research project led by Dr Sze Yen Tan. This project focuses on the effects of increased nut intake on older adults’ functional capacity with the specific aim to investigate the effects of 6-month nut butter supplementation on various measures of body composition and functional capacity outcomes such as lean mass, muscle strength, cognitive function, and late-life function and disability. The research project will also explore whether the effects of the nut butter intervention on functional outcomes are mediated by changes in overall diet quality.
Your key responsibilities will include:
- Conduct high-quality research, scholarship and creative activities generating high impact outputs, with mentorship
- Engage collaboratively to participate in novel and high-quality research or creative activities
- Communicate outputs, including as part of team
- Participate in intra- and inter-disciplinary research collaborations
- Begin to build track record of timely delivery of outcomes for industry partners
- Develop working relationship with mentors and supervisors
- Adopt culture of research excellence, innovation and impact
- Contribute to Deakin community and its effectiveness via local engagement and citizenship activities
- Understand the objectives and outcomes to be delivered by the University’s strategic agenda
- Contribute to community beyond Deakin via engagement activities
- Support Deakin community engagement plan
Key selection criteria for this role:
- PhD in exercise or nutrition science, or relevant research qualifications and experience in project management
- Demonstrated organisational skills in conducting clinical research in adults, preferably older adults, and strong project management skills e.g. maintaining a high standard of laboratory and data record keeping
- Experience with screening and recruiting of human volunteers.
- Experience with conducting clinical and laboratory testing of human participants, including muscle strength and function, and body composition (capability to conduct DXA assessment is desirable)
- Experience with managing research databases with programs/software such as Filemaker Pro, REDCap, Excel, SPSS and/or Stata
- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and to work effectively as a member of an interdisciplinary team
- Strong communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to meet competing deadlines, and liaise with key stakeholders, decision-makers and other researchers
- Emerging research and scholarship through publications and/or conference presentations
