Job description
Are you passionate about research and teaching? Do you specialize in the field of Political Communication & Journalism? Effective immediately, we are seeking an Associate Professor for this specialization.
The Department of Communication Science invites applications for an Associate Professor position in Political Communication & Journalism, starting as soon as possible. As an Associate Professor, you will be a member of the Political Communication & Journalism Group which is one of the four program groups in the Department of Communication Science at the University of Amsterdam. The Political Communication & Journalism program group investigates the dynamics of communication about and within the political world.
The programme group Political Communication & Journalism studies and teaches how, and under which conditions, news and other communication with informational purposes is produced, the contents of this information, how audiences use and process it, and what effects it has. A central question is how citizens, organizations, and institutions use media and communication to become informed about public affairs and to participate in them. It is a starting point that citizens have become ‘critical consumers’ also in the realm of politics and this affects their information seeking behaviour as well as the use and effects of new information. Research and teaching in this program often has an internationally comparative orientation. Our theories address the core of democracy so a major task of the program is to develop and test theories that help improve democratic processes.
Courses we teach in our Master programs are the specialization seminars Citizens and Public Opinion, Journalism and the Media, and electives like Investigative Journalism, Data Journalism, Psychology in Political Communication, Political Marketing, and The Misinformation Crisis? For our students in the joint degree Mundus Journalism Master specializing in Politics & Communication we offer courses on Communicating Europe, Data Journalism and the Journalistic Product. In the Bachelor, we teach the Domain Module Political Communication and Journalism, elective courses about Political Marketing, Campaigns and Voters, and The Role of Emotions in Political Communication, and Graduation Projects in which students write their Bachelor thesis.
Within the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Communication Science offers a Bachelor’s and several Master’s degree programmes. With more than 2,400 undergraduate and graduate students, Communication Science is among the largest departments at the University of Amsterdam with an outstanding international reputation. The College of Communication and the Graduate School of Communication offer a Bachelor and Master program, a European joint degree program in Journalism and a Research Master, the only of its kind in the Netherlands. The teaching in our Communication Science program is interdisciplinary and internationally oriented, offering tracks taught in both English and Dutch.
The Amsterdam School of Communication Research(ASCoR ) is the research institute for the Communication Science department, and formulated an ambitious Research programme.
