The Onsager fellowship programme

The Onsager Fellowship programme at NTNU is designed to attract talented early-career scholars with a track-record of high quality published research, ready to work independently and with the potential to become a research leader.

The tenure-track associate professor’s duties will primarily include research, but also include supervision, teaching, and other duties necessary to qualify for a permanent professor position within 6 – 7 years.

In the NTNU tenure-track programme, associate professors are subject to two types of review during the tenure-track period:

  • a mid-career assessment after 3-4 years
  • a final tenure assessment at the end of the tenure track period

If the “final tenure assessment” is positive, s/he will be employed as a full-time professor.

The overall purpose of the review system is to ensure and maintain the high academic standards of the university’s senior faculty staff. To help meet these standards, the associate professor is offered an international mentor and favourable terms.

NTNU is now announcing 16 tenure-track positions.

The Department of Historical and Classical Studies (IHK) has a vacancy for a tenure-track position as part of the Onsager Fellowship Programme.

Associate Professor in European Studies

The tenure-track position in European Studies will be associated with the research environment in European Studies at the Department of Historical and Classical Studies (IHK). In its research, the environment explores the process of European integration, and political, economic, societal and security developments in Europe and the EU, with a particular emphasis on cooperation and conflict. As such, the European Studies environment conducts research on some of the most timely and relevant questions Europe is currently faced with, namely, how to promote democratic governance and resilience, as well as security in Europe and its surrounding countries.

To further strengthen the work of the research environment we are seeking a candidate working on security and democracy in Europe and its neighborhood, with a particular focus on cooperation and conflict. The new position will be at the level of Associate Professor. Applicants should hold a Phd in European Studies or political science and have a strong track record of international publications in the field of European foreign and security policy (in the past 5 years) with evidence of an active research agenda going forward.

The European Studies research environment has the ambition of further expanding its involvement in high-quality research through participation in highly competitive research schemes. The Onsager fellow is expected to actively contribute towards achieving this strategic objective by submitting grant applications to the European Research Council, Horizon Europe and/or the Research Council of Norway prior to being evaluated for tenure.

Your immediate leader is the Head of Department.
