Campus: St. George (Downtown Toronto)

Description:

The Department of Physics in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in the area of Experimental Quantum Condensed Matter Physics. The appointment will be at the rank of Associate Professor, with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2027.

Applicants must have earned a PhD degree in Physics with a focus on Condensed Matter/Solid State Physics or a related area and a clearly demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing strengths in the Department of Physics. We seek candidates conducting research in experimental Quantum Condensed Matter Physics that bring transport and thermodynamic techniques to bear on 3D materials such as superconductors, quantum magnets, and topological materials. Candidates must have a background in developing new techniques for extreme environments, such as low temperatures and high magnetic fields, as well as in pushing the envelope of data analysis through techniques such as machine learning. The successful candidate will have an established international reputation and will be expected to sustain and lead innovative and independent research, and to maintain an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program.

Candidates must have a proven track record in obtaining research infrastructure support and research funding in the range of tens of millions of dollars from national agencies, possibly in collaboration with national research laboratories. Candidates should also have served in leadership roles within the quantum materials community, directing institutes or running centers. The successful candidate will have received awards from both federal funding agencies and private foundations, e.g. the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Candidates should have experience working with world-leading technologies, such as the extreme magnetic fields found at high magnetic field labs.

Candidates must have taught courses in a range of Physics courses covering introductory physics, wave mechanics, thermodynamics, and graduate solid state physics. Particular teaching expertise is desired in the area of advanced experimental labs – the successful candidate will have led such a course and developed new materials for it.

The successful candidate may be nominated for a Canada Impact+ Research Chair. The Canada Impact+ Research Chairs initiative is designed to support institutions in attracting world-leading researchers to address critical national and global challenges. The program emphasizes both research excellence and tangible impact. Impact+ Chairs will receive long-term funding and institutional supports that advance ambitious and transformative projects in Canada’s strategic priority areas, build and maintain exceptional research teams, and collaborate with partners across sectors and borders. Impact+ chairholders will drive the translation of discoveries into applications, commercialization and social and economic benefits for Canada and the world, and develop the next generation of highly qualified personnel.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of sustained high-impact contributions and publications in top-ranked and field relevant journals, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and other noteworthy activities that contribute to the visibility and prominence of the discipline, as well as strong endorsements from referees.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be demonstrated through teaching accomplishments, and the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application (with required materials outlined below), as well as strong letters of reference.

The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The salary range of this position exceeds $200,000 CAD per annum.
